once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Awesome, no brainer. Those toms are begging for some new coated Remos though :)

I put new coated Ludwigs on mine. I hadn't bought Ludwig heads in years but they just seemed more appropriate.

Dang $300, $60! I guess I got took!

Since we're sharing--my best deal: I bought a 60s Ludwig Hollywood kit in blue sparkle for $400. It came with a full set of Zildjian As (hats, 3 crashes, a ride) and hardware, a Supraphonic, some deep steel Yamaha snare, original cases, and a stick bag with several new pairs of sticks and brushes. I sold the kit for $800, Supraphonic for $140, etc. etc. etc...

But, my FAVORITE deal was my Ludwig Downbeat for $800, with a Pearl snare and several cymbals. After selling off the extras, I ended up paying just under $300 for the 12/14/20 kit, and have used it ever since. Best. Kit. Ever.

1970 Ludwig Downbeat
1965 Ludwig Hollywood

Frickin' killer drum set and even better story! It really helps to have someone in your relationship who realizes your passion. I am lucky to have that. I am realizing now that if you see a bar of gold for a quarter. Best not to offer a dime. Pay the quarter, get home and celebrate. Good times!

I have a real affinity for blue sparkle...Now, That deal for $300.00 is GREAT! However, here's a tale of near woe and a save by my wonderful wife:The kit in the picture below was sitting out front at a yard sale about a mile from our house. It was a Saturday morning. In fact, it was April 25th, 2009. We were going somewhere, for something. Maybe it was groceries, I really don't remember.Anyway, I was driving, and my wife says: 'look, there's a drum set at that yard sale. It's blue.' I turned my head to look, but not quickly enough. I shrugged, and went ahead to where ever it was we were going. A bit less than an hour later, we were heading back home on the same street. We both see the kit at the same time, and both of us remark that the kit is still there. Then she says; 'Those look nice, we should go back...'Okay, so who am I to argue with the blonde-who-must-be-obeyed. There's a road divider, so I go to the next corner, make the 'U' and stop at the sale. As we get closer, I can see it's not some MIT crud, but I still can't make it out. HOLY GUACAMOLE! (Actually, I said a few more things under my breath)I asked the guy running the sale about the drums.'Yep', the guy says, 'It's still for sale, but I won't take a penny less than sixty bucks'.Being a bit cantankerous, and cheap, I decided to test his statement (especially as there was no one else at the sale at that moment.)Forty? 'Nope' he said. Fifty? I've got the cash... 'Nope' he replied smiling. By this time we both knew where this was going, but then he surprised me.'Fifty five' for the drums, and five bucks more and I'll have my son (a large strapping fellow in his mid teens) load 'em.'Done, says I. That night, I surprised my wife and took her to her favorite restaurant for dinner. Normally, I'd upload the pix, but they have made an appearance on the forum a few times before. So, in a blatant plug kind of way:http://www.fishwaltz.com/luclas.html

The c-list scores are great when you get 'em. I also got a silver sparkle hollywood in near mint with full 60's Zildjians (22, 18, 16, 15 hats) a couple of months ago for $850. Original owner with original heads. They haven't been played since the 70's. A crate of vintage accessories as well.

My best CL deal went down like this:

I'm on CL several times a day. Last summer at about 5pm on a friday, I spot a post that's ten minutes old for "Old blue Ludwigs, $30 OBO". I can't dial the number fast enough. A 12 year old kid tells me that someone else already called and he's holding them for him. I ask how soon the buyer will be there. He tells me that he's coming tomorrow. I tell him I can be to his house in 12 minutes, with an extra $5 if he'll sell to me. I hear him cover the phone and tell his mom that someone offered more money. Excitedly, he tells me that I can come get them if I bring the extra $5.

When I get there, this freckle faced kid named Kevin brings me down to his basement with his mom. He explains that these drums were a gift from the neighbor and that they (Kevin and his mom) just want to get rid of them.

My heart skipped a beat when he brought them out – pre-serial 12" and 20" club date drums in unfaded blue sparkle. The tom was missing one hoop and one set of tension rods, but other than that, they were gorgeous. The badges looked brand spanking new. The original front bass drum reso head had been colored by the kids with their kid-band logo.

As he's helping me out to my car, he tells me he's had 12 phone calls in the last 45 minutes. He was just happy he could go buy a couple used PS3 games now.

The next morning, I honestly felt really bad – but other people reminded me that I didn't haggle or lowball him, I just paid what they were asking and went on my way. That helped. I still kinda feel bad though.

Unfortunately, I was in no financial condition to restore it or find any parts to complete it. A week later, I sold the kit (in the exact condition I bought it in) for $300. I kept the reso head from the bass drum though. It's up on my wall.
