Ludwig & Ludwig & Leedy & Leedy & Ludwig? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Hello forum detectives.

I have another one for you guys if you would be so kind. I have an opportunity to pick this drum up, and I just want to know if anyone has any idea what it is for sure and if it is all original?

Obviously has the "Ludwig Universal" hoop. The date stamp on the inside says August of 1939, but isn't that Leedy's stamp? Was the same stamp used on Ludwig drums when Conn owned both? Is it normal for this model to have no badge? Nothing burned into the shell...just the Universal hoop.

The finish looks Walnut, but according to the Ludwig book, they only offered walnut in the 20's, and then started offering a Universal model in Mahogany in 1940. Is this a solid mahogany shell?

Just curious if anyone can tell me for sure what this is and what a fair price to pay for it would be.

Thanks!

Yep, that is a Ludwig & Ludwig Universal model. It is mahogany, just seems to have a bit of patina to it. And yes, Conn used the same ink stampings inside the shell on both Leedy and Ludwig & Ludwig at the time. Both were made on the same production line, so there would be a natural sharing of production methods.

Cool. Thanks for the info LD.

Anyone on what a ballpark good price is for one of these? Do they sound good for any modern application?

Thanks!
