Ludwig 1970s double tom mount question

Loading...

Hi guys,

My 1976 double tom mount (on the bass drum) can no longer be tightened. The hexagon-head bolt just turns and turns, and never tightens against the metal plate inside the assembly. I’ve tried to remove the bolt to replace it, but perhaps the bottom of the bolt is staked, so it cannot be lost accidentally? I cannot tighten the bolt, and I cannot back it out.

Since I cannot remove the bolt, I cannot determine if the bolt threads are stripped, or the internal threads in the mount are stripped.

Any ideas? I see a few of these mounts on ebay, and perhaps that is the only solution. Thanks.

I've replaced a couple of these with used ones and also one with a new Ludwig mount. The new mounts drop right in and work great.

The bolt is most likely stripped as well as the casting. If you can get the bolt out, you can always repair the threads in the casting with a thread insert such as a Heli-coil. Then install a new bolt of the same type as the original (matching the thread size of the insert of course) and no one would be any the wiser, and you would then also have an original part on your vintage kit, rather than one of the newer castings, which are similar, but not identical to yours. Heli-coils and bolts are cheaper than buying another casting, but much more labor intensive. Not hard to do if you are mechanically inclined, but if you're not....then go the replacement route ;)

I had that happen on a couple of these. The threads are cut into the casting itself (pot metal) and the steel bolt is much harder so eventually it strips out the threads. Best bet is to get a new replacement. Those also have a slot in the casting for a memory lock which is a great improvement. You always end up with the toms at the same height and the post can't spin around in the base as these sometimes do.
