Lower back problems anyone ?

Hey guys,

Was just wondering if anyone else has dealt with lower back problems and how it's affected your drumming ? Personally i've been dealing with back problems since i was in my 20's but it wasn't drum related..

This current problem is just sore joint and muscle pain, and again it's not drumming related.. I've recently started working out to get back into shape and so far i feel a lot better than i did 4 months ago and feel a significant difference in my overall posture, energy and strength..However, it was only while stretching i felt i may have pulled something on my lower back, and this is affecting my joints and thigh bone areas..I haven't exerted myself during exercises because i know my limitations as someone who hasn't worked out since i was in my early 20's and was very careful not over do it because if i'm immobilized in anyway, i won't be able to work or make a living, and with today's economy, that's something i or any working musician can't afford to lose..

My questions are to anyone who may answer them, is this..

Who should i see for this type of pain ? Physiotherapist, or Chiropractor ? does anyone have any type of stretching or physical therapy techniques that have worked for you ?

Any and all suggestions are welcome..As of now, i'm still exercising but not overdoing it, and when i stretch i'm very careful not to exert myself..I should also mention that i take medication for Crohn's disease, and the medication, as my Dr has told me, affects the joints , cartilage , and muscles of my body..For this reason i will begin to take vitamin supplements such as glucosamine, which is good for all those parts of the body..

Just sounds like you need a little back support is all. There are plenty of good lower back braces made for sports that are invisible under clothes and will give your back the needed support to sit through long sessions or gigs.

I go to a chiropractor twice a year just for a tune-up. It wouldn't hurt to seek out a good local guy and book a few sessions to get your spine properly aligned and corrected if it's out of alignment. Visit to a good bone crusher will help.

Too many great drums to list here!

I have a VERY bad back. Discs shot. I see a neck and spine doc monthly. I'd see someone first to diagnose your issue. Then my guess some PT and you'll be back at it. My case is a bit more severe. You want a good diagnose before you think about seeing a Chiropracter. so you know exactly what your dealing with. Sounds like your not too bad just need a point in the right direction. My case 2 bad car accidents and 37 years in a trade filled with poor lifting habits and here I am today. LOL

I recommend a visit to a chiropractor...They should first take x-rays of the problematic area(s) to see what is going on and then customize a program to your needs...

I`ve been going to my chiro for about 7 years and feel a lot better than I did before I started seeing him...I have stage 2 disc degeneration in my lower lumbar...

Cheers

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Hey Guys ..

Thanks so much for all the responses and suggestions.. I'm going to look into all of them, but i think the Chiro will be the first option to pinpoint my problem..

Gar- My wife and i have thought about doing yoga together, an will definitely look into it.. I'm also going to research stretches and exercises for conditions like mine, once i find out what the problem is.. Thanks to all of you !

Cheers !

A good quality drum throne with a back rest will help along with good posture while playing.Easier said than done with the posture, but the throne back rest will give some relief when you are playing.I`ve been lucky so far and i`ve been making my living on a drum stool for 45 yrs.I sincerely hope your back issues will be resolved with godspeed and best of luck with your decisions in this regard.
