Looking for answers on an old drum

Loading...

I have an old Ludwig snare drum shell that I know nothing about. It is a 6X12 3ply

with reinforcement rings. I think it may be birch but Im not totally sure. It is undrilled and it doesn't have a metal badge.

Any thoughts?

it's a 20's or very early 30's do you have the rest of the parts, the rims, thumb screws, and snare strainer also does it mount on the top rim? and gut snares?

I wish I did have the rest of the parts, but unfortunately all I have is the shell. Thanks for the reply and shedding some light on this mystery.

Certainly, your snare drum is probably a junior model? no postive on that yet. here's a link that will keep you busy for awhile on ludwig snare drum history! I wish you had the parts, so there are no holes other in the shell other than the vent hole?http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/ludwig_snare_drum_catalog_pages.html

Yep. It's a Ludwig Junior model. The grommet is made from Bakelite. It would have been a single-tension tuning system with 6 t-rods. The strainer (no throwoff) was rim-mounted and there was no butt assembly -just a tab through which the wire-wrapped, linen snare wires would have passed.

I'm not sure what the shell of yours was made from -my guess would have been maple....but it looks different than the maple reinforcement rings, so it could be birch or butternut or walnut....?? I'd have to study the grain more closely.

It would have had either red-painted hoops or black painted with a tin strip.

Officially, it's a "Junior" or possibly a "School drum" -all classified under the "Juvenile" drum section of the old catalogs.

Toy or not that's a very well-made shell. It would put many modern shells to shame.
