Looking for an age range on this Ludwig drum Last viewed: 3 hours ago

It's slightly weird because a student drum would usually have 6-8 lugs as opposed to 10. As has been mentioned, the throwoff is apparently an early P-83 model that came out in the late 50's...but the tacked-on badge is a juvenile badge that was most always included with the lower-line student drums up until about the start of the 50's. The color scheme suggests a school or club application. So, it's one of those mystery drums!

I seem to remember that pink/peach color as being popular on automobiles in the 50's

What's throwing me off is the ten lugs with the juvenile badge.

Thanks for the details and help...

I put new heads on it and it sounds great.

Picked it up at a furniture consignment shop for 29$, so i figure win win.

And the 10 lug is throwing me as well.

I agree. It IS a cool drum. It's either a 40's drum or it's a 50's drum! Ludwig was always known for using up parts and anomalies do appear from time to time, so it could have been an older shell combined with some of the newer hardware....but a ten-lug single tension drum is most strange for something from either of those two eras. A ten lug drum is more "deluxe" but a single tension drum is less deluxe. The badge is usually only seen on juvenile drums. The grommet is bakelite which preceded plastic -also a sign of an earlier drum....

Could it have been a former single-tension (with no eyelet guides affixed to the shell) drum that someone took and customized by adding ten eyelets and t-rods and P-83?

WHOOOOOPS! Hold the PHONE! I think I see it, now!

I THOUGHT there was a black, bakelite grommet in the picture...but now I see there is NO grommet (Is that correct?). This would tell me that the drum has been changed at some point.

I think (my theory) someone took a 10-lug single tension drum, removed the badge/grommet, repainted the drum and then tacked an earlier badge on the drum. The latest year that I could even find a 10-lug single tension shell is from the 1936 catalog and it was called a "Ludwig Drummer Parade Drum"...But the dimensions are 12" X 15"

I think there has been some customization to this drum over the years.

So It looks like I have a mutant on my hands!

There is a number "583" on the tuning key holder. and no grommet on the shell

Maybe this thing was a custom order by a marching band. Would that have been standard fair back in the day?

And it is a 10" x 15" ( I rechecked to make sure )

Any idea what this mutant is worth?

Thanks a million for the replies.
