I'm proud of all of us (especially myself) for exercising great restraint when dealing with someone who might have been a troll. Mum was the screen name used by a person or people who asked some questions about a great looking vintage Rogers drum set. I think that the mother initiated the topic, and then a young child (probably under age 16) began the disjointed attempt at dialogue with some of us. Before I unloaded on the kid, who already had his mind made up to get rid of those great old American-made drums for something Asian and shiny new, I excused myself from the waste of time thread. Do any of you think that "Mum" was for real? I'm now thinking that we were being punked.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

When I wrote "what the...?" I really wanted to write "Troll." Worst thing you can do is post an indignant response as they feed off of that.

My internet experience pretty much began on the google group "sci.physics", which is an un-moderated vipers nest of vicious insults. It bothers me to see weirdos creeping into a site like this with normal well-intentioned good folks like you guys. Best thing is to stay silent and let the moderator handle it...by which I mean - mum's the word! :)

Mum was definately not for real and leedybdp,-you were the first to pick up on this and a good pick ta` boot.Something smelled fishy right off the top of that thread, so it will be interesting to see if Mum starts another thread and how they`ll respond to Tommy P`s closure of the thread.

+1 on what Mitch has said above and thanks to Tommy P. for his handling of this one.Good job guys.

Lets recap the first 2 pages of that thread. "Mum" started the thread asking about the Rogers and market value. Several members took time from their day to give input and help. Almost everyone who responded praised Rogers drums to the fullest, and we also gave honest feedback about how to possibly value the drums in todays market. By the 3rd page, it was apparent our words were falling on deaf ears and at that point I was convinced the OP was insincere .

It may very well have been a windup from the start. At the end of the day all we can do is keep our side of the street clean and try to help the best we can. I think we did just that.

If we were suckered , so be it. I'm sure the responsible party feels they've accomplished their mission.

Well THANKS guys! As I've said many times before: This is why David pays me the BIG bucks! Seriously though:

You guys are the BEST! Everyone took the time and with great patience to help "mum" in "their" quest for answers, even when it got ridiculous. Great restraint, coupled with that old adage: "Patience is a virtue". Indeed. So yes... we will have to see what "mum" is going to do... or not do. Until then, then...

Such a shame if the kid or whoever just unloads the drums to Guitar Center for some run of the mill kit. At least when I was a kid I went through several kits before I found what I liked. I guess I started flipping and trading drums at age 15 to be honest.

That person got the collective wisdom of many years for $0.

Whether it was a joke, a misunderstanding, or simply a case of good solicited advice falling on deaf ears, I give credit to those who tried to help.

That thread was enough to test anybody's patience.

I can't pat myself on the back because I got seriously P.O.d at him/her/whoever. The cat was just out to start some sh*t and disrupt our regular proceedings, for what? Personal amusement/entertainment?

The good news is, our guys sussed him out and busted him for being a troll early on in the thread. My mistake was not seeing it in time myself. I felt bad for the guy when people started to get on his case and question him. My only contribution to the thread was to try to make the guy and his son feel welcome at VDF. I got a nasty-gram pm'ed to me accusing me of "telling him how to raise his children" for my efforts to treat the guy decently. Ergo, my second post in the thread where I kind of 'lost it' with him and told him where to get off. I'm glad Tommy closed it before he accomplished his mission and disrupted the peace at our mutual hang out.

Sorry I didn't pick up on this guy sooner...

John, you don`t have to apologize for anything in regards to that thread. You were only trying to welcome whoever/whatever they were to the VDF."Were all for one and one for all on this forum" and hopefully now we can get our hangout back to normal as the great place it really is.
