Has anyone confirmed that the ludwig lugs will fit b&b snare lugs?

Good Forum,

Just wondering if there are any patent infringement liabilities on making BnB lugs?(just curious why no other company makes these besides the obvious??) Without mentioning the monopoly on the repros with are out of the reach of the common enthusiast, if I were to make repros( beefed up ones of course ala JP something......) could Rogers or whoever owns it come back on me legally for duplicating them? Is there a patent on a BnB lug? I have a couple of BnB kits with absolute monster shells and re-ovalling is not an option. I understand the obvious with die/casting etc. and the related expenses just wondering about the legal aspect of it.

thx

attached list I've compiled for anything patented by Josephus Brown Thompson. #23 is the beavertail. I do not believe there was a patent for the previous lug designs. If anyone has anything to add to this list of 43 please do not hesitate to email me direct. fltgrycleav@yahoo

Thanks, Gary Nelson

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the info. If there's no patent it will make things a lot easier!!

thx

I had a talk with a vintage drum collector friend of mine who has 2 sets of Rogers b/b sets... no broken lugs. He confirms that it's cranking up a mylar head way too tight that leads to their demise. His suggestion is a good one.. Use a thin synthetic head, or an Earthtone calf head, as they are going to be less torture on the lugs. Then go enjoy your drum set.

That's a great answer is my book......

Are you planning on doing this in the near future? If you could get a descent price on those repros I'm definitly interested in buying some for my kit!

Is a picture confirmation? Here is an Eagle badge Rogers 9x13 tom that I took the BnB lugs off and traded away. I then took small Ludwig Classic lugs, installed them, put a Ludwig strainer on it and made a "Rat Rod" snare out of it.

No, I'm talking about the double ended style lug

Great answer to the ears - but still significantly risky should you choose plastic\synthetic (have no experience w\real hide heads). Agreed that a thin one-ply plastic head is really the only choice - but it guarantees you nada - just reduces the likelihood by a small (albeit not insignificant) percentage. Misleading to say that going thin one-ply synthetic does an end-around the problem. Regarding the patent - methinks it wouldn't be a problem (am assuming Mr Petty didn't go thru all of that rigmarole) - and if so - one could just simply change ONE SMALL element of the design.

There are 2 types of B&B snare casings - large and small - the hole spacing (c\c) on the large B&B snare lugs equals 2-1\8"
