left handed vintage kits - Valued more or less? (rail on the opposite side of kick)

A novel approach to using the rail mount! A beautiful set of drums... and those cymbals probably sound fantastic! Permit me, though, to say that the high hat stand overpowers the rest of the hardware! Mark

I'm happy to say that the drums & cymbals overpower the hardware!... though the hi-hat stand fulfills its function reliably.

This set is for playing, not for putting on display.

Point well taken! Please know that I was not trying to insult in the least.

Mark, Cool, no offense taken.

It may have escaped your notice that the b.d. pedal is a Sonor Phonic, circa 1980.

I wore out my Gretsch Floating Action a few decades ago!

hello guys, was just wondering your thoughts on left handed vintage kits.i do buy/sell/trade and have a deal pending on an original lefty setup kit, where the rail is mounted on the right side of the bass drum.has anyone here re-sold left handed vintage setups? would u say they are more or less desirable then a right handed set up, or its about the same, just do a snare stand for the tom to make it a righty setup?let me know your thoughts/opinions/experiencesthanks

In 35+ years on dealing with these 60's M.I.J. set .I have had only one original lefty set up that i have sold..I had it for 5 year's before i sold it,lefty drummer's are hard to fine.

So to me Yes lefty's are rare to fine harder to sell..Mikey

if i get the kit i have the option to re drill 2 holes for the mount to set up in righty position... or just keep it original and use a snare stand to mount the tom... thoughts on devaluing vs demand?

If you got the set,and if it does not have a "L" arm cymbal mount on the other side of the drum and if its a common color.

You can add another rail mount and tom to the bass drum making it a 5 pc set....You know that Slingerland had a set-up like that in the 60's....Mikey

roundbadgedude,

I'm confused.

On reviewing the thread, I can't find any reference to the make. I believe I am not the only respondent who assumed it to be a Gretsch on account of your moniker.

However, in the most recent post, Mikey777 refers to a "M.I.J." set.

If that's the case, it would explain why you posted in "Non-USA".

If it is a 60s M.I.J. set, from the point of view of collector's value, my suggestion would be: drill as many new holes as you like.

Clapping Happy2I have what appears to be a factory made lefty drum kit minus the snare

The four drum shells 20" bass, 12" and 13" rail mounted toms and 16" floor tom all have "Matador" badges

and are wrapped in the tiger eye pearl or root beer strata finish

when I bought them sort of sight unseen that is to say,

I saw only one small badly lit photo good enough to see that the drums were the tiger eye wrap

but that was it WOW!! Tiger eye pearl....I pulled the trigger on them

It was only after picking them up

one and one half hours away in Amesbury Mass

that I realized there were some condition issues

The rail mount had been moved over from its original position.

I was thinking to myself ..why would someone drill extra holes just to move the rail a few inches?

Also the spur brackets were moved, and though I put them back as I think they belong,

the medium length, straight, spur rods do not reach the floor

I suspect they are not original and that the type I need start out straight

but then bend at about a forty-five degree angle to meet the floor.

I am looking into this further

but so far I can not find any photos of another Matador kit to compare the spur rods with

Another issue was the drums were all missing resonant side heads, hoops, and hardware including even the lugs.

In order to replace the missing lugs on the bass drum I had to first remove the rail from its modified position

so as to not have it interfere with one of the replacement lugs. luckily scrounged up from the boneyard here at the shop. I have replaced all the missing lugs on the bass and two rail mounted toms

so I have only the floor tom lugs to look for

I even found five of the eight missing reso side t-rods

The internal mufflers for the two mounted toms are both missing as well

Once I got these two drums back together with heads and hoops

it was only then that I realized the twelve inch tom was set up

so that the badge faced outward only if the drum was mounted to the right as you sit behind the kit with the larger 13" drum set up to be mounted to the left.

I thought for a moment I could just invert the drums and their badges

But that still left the problem of having the planned replacement internal mufflers upside down.

That was when I finally realized the kit was intentionally built for a left handed drummer

That might explain why the rail had been moved, most likely a right handed drummer

trying to set the drums up to be played as a right handed kit

with the badges on the mounted toms facing backward toward the drummer

So I suppose they are what they are

A somewhat rare "Matador" badged lefty kit in Tiger eye pearl

with some extra holes here and there ....Kenwood

[QUOTE=roundbadgedude;233387]ok then the spurs are backwards and the tom sits way back... any other bright ideas?[/QUOThe rail is pretty much dead center on the bass drum on most vintage mij bass drums.
