Im considering picking up a set of drums not unlike this one...

Wondering if you guys could tell me some of the similarities and differences between it and a set of similar era WFL Classics, i.e. shell construction, value and overall sound.

The drums are both good examples of what great drums used to be like. The Leedy is my choice for their warmer and fuller sound. Although, the WFL drums are every bit as good, they just don't sound as full-bodied to me.

The Leedy book says that these drums are basically Slingerland drums, as I believe they're from 1955-1956. What does this mean exactly? Should the Leedys generally cost more than Slingerlands or WFLs?
They should cost more. But, fortunately, SlingerLeedy drums are some of the best bargains in vintage drums because they are relatively unknown even to some drum collectors.
The deal is essentially this drum kit in similar finish/condition plus the matching 5x14 snare for $895. Is that reasonable for these drums?
My experience has been the opposite... I have a set of '56 WFL's, and I found them to be more warm and full-sounding than my old set of Leedys (which I think were somewhere between '61-'63).
The draw to the Leedys, IMO, is all about the lugs. I mean, I love Ludwig Classics, but the deco Leedy lugs are some of the most beautiful pieces of drum hardware ever produced. Also, the push button FT leg mounts are a bit more reliable and easier to use than the clip n' spring FT leg mounts WFL used.
It seems like Leedy kits are selling between $1000-$1200, with $1200 being the high retail end of the spectrum. I paid $1200 for my 13/16/22/5.5x14 matching snare WFL kit last year. Depending on finish and overall condition, I'm not sure one is going to cost you much more than the other. It's probably going to be close to a push.

The shells of the late '50s WFLs and the same era Slingerlands / Leedys are remarkable the same. Both are 3 ply with the mahogany interiors and maple rings.
IMO, they're the best of all the vintage drums. Either would be great...get the best, most original set that you really like and you can afford.
