leedy engraved snare drum Last viewed: 5 hours ago

last few days ive been working on an early leedy engraved snare drum. not knowing much about them, ive been doing all the reading and searching for info that I can. i wanted to share it in case any of you could give me any information about it.

its a 5x15. I can't seem to find any other pics of examples in this size. mine has the 2 hole lugs which I think, along with the engraving makes it a 1924 model. my hoops are steel done in knobby gold and have no logos anywhere on them. ive searched and searched with a magnifying glass and can't find anything. mine does not have the extra curved beads around the tension rods on the hoops. I had read that by 1924, they had these. I'm thinking the proper name for my drum may be a mutil model classic or a utility model instead of the later used black elite name? mine has the utility strainer on it.

ive looked at all the engaving patterns that I can find and still can't find one that has the same pattern as mine. the panel around the air hole even has something like a banner that is open inside. looks like it was done to possibly engrave something else in it at some later point. just an idea though.

i'm looking for a few parts to complete it. it was missing the tension rods on the bottom hoop. they are slotted fillister heads that are 10-24 and 1 13/16 long. the bottom portion of the strainer is also missing. I picked up some brass machine screws for the bottom right now that match pretty well. also made a makeshift bottom for the strainer so that I could play it some. it really sounds nice.

as far as cleaning, it was dirty. I was very careful and mostly used dawn and water to clean it up. haven't used any lemon oil or 3 in one oil to polish it up yet. these are classy looking drums, to say the least.

66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Mike - Wow! What a beauty and what a find!

Is the pattern engraved (cut into the metal,) or is it etched (photochemically engraved)?

I can't help you out with info because I know so little about those very old Leedy's, but maybe Mike Curotto will chime in, I'll bet he can tell you something about it.

Wipe down the shell and the hardware/hoops etc. with a Cape Cod cloth! It made my 20's BB shine like it was brand new. Mike C uses 3-In-One oil and gets amazing results.

Great drum...

its engraved, cut into the metal. the only reason I didn't use cape cod on the hardware was due to the nobby gold. cape cod has some abrasives in it. the nobby gold is simply a copper colored lacquer, from what I gather. didn't want to take any chances on removing anymore of it. when I cleaned it, none came off, I will say.

this one has seen more action and is not as pristine as your black beauty. that's for sure.

ive had several wanting to buy it, but this may be the closest I get to a Ludwig deluxe(black beauty). plus, I love it for what it is. leedy made some fine drums.

Mikey - for my money, the drums Leedy made were every bit as good as, if not better in some cases, than Ludwig or any of the other 'name' manufacturers. I bet sound-wise, and certainly build-wise, your snare would stand up right next my Luddy BB.

BTW, the Cape Cods didn't hurt the gold plating on my BB at all. What it did was to help visually blend in any little missing chips in the plating because everything came out so shiny.

Great score my friend. Beautiful drum. It's in the best of homes and the best hands.

Was there less of the Leedy drums made? Seeing how they were not in the game as long as others?

I actually have the same drum! It is a Multi-Model Leedy before they were called black elite. Should say it some where on the top hoop. Sometimes very hard to see.
