Leedy BDP 1963 Shelly Manne Set

When I joined this great forum, I posted pictures of my vintage drum sets with one exception. I was dismayed to find out that the pictures of my namesake Leedy BDP set had vanished from my computer. I acquired this set from Bobby Chiasson in Argyle, New York. Anyone who knows of Bobby and his shop, The Jollity Drum Farm, know that his photos of drums are works of art. Well.................the wonderful pictures that Bobby had taken of this museum grade set are the pictures that somehow vanished from my new computer. So, here are a couple of lame photos that I shot this morning. The drums are a factory matched 1963 set of Black Diamond Pearl Leedys:

14x20 with rail consolette

16x16 with fully functioning push button leg mounts and intact muffler no vent hole

9x13 with intact muffler no vent hole

Shelly Manne 5.5x14 matching snare drum (almost a twin of a Radio King)

I have acquired two Shelly Manne bass drum pedals (one is pictured) and a Shelly Manne hihat that is at the bottom of my spare hardware pile. These pieces of hardware are the Slingerland models with the Leedy Shelly Manne foot board.

All drums came to Bobby, and then to me with the Diplomat heads stamped with the Henry Adler store logo.

I had a 20" Leedy bass drum at one time same finish as yours. Could never figure out what those shells were made out of. Mine was an early 60's. Did they use a birch ply inside and out ? Real solid and beautifully shaped .

The 3 ply "unimold" shells were phased in by the mid 1960's. I may be wrong, but I think that most Slingerland and SlingerLeedy shells from the 60's onward were made of mahogany/maple or poplar/mahogany. This lasted for all of the Slingerleedy life span. Shells slated for staining or painting usually had a maple outer ply--sometimes a fourth vaneer of maple. Slingerland's version of Black Diamond Pearl featured a larger random pattern and more definition between the blacks, grays, and silvers in the color pallette.

Its been years since I had that bass drum, but I remember an extra ply like you said. It made the shell a little beefier. Mine came with pristine calf heads and the shell was a virgin . Probably the most beautiful lugs of any out there in vintage land. I wonder where Leedy got their maple from ? Same as the Big three ?
