Latest Speed King rebuild ideas....feedback?

Just finished a rebuild of a very nice WFL Speed King for one of our own... Like to get some feedback on the latest ideas. I guess mainly on two parts: the knob I used to replace that ridiculous (IMHO) wing screw on the pedal clamp, and the nuts I'm using to hold in place the new nylon bushings in the pedal hinge.

I'm trying to make them as unobtrusive as possible, to preserve the vintage look. I know some like to use a new steel rod with eclips, and while there's nothing really wrong with that and it is unobtrusive, I like to avoid metal-on-metal moving parts when I can.

I DID learn how to replace the rivet to hold the flat steel "spring" on the toe of the footboard, so I can still modify the footboard to get the nylon bushing in there without affecting the vintage look.

What do you think of the heel hinge...and/or any ideas you want to share? ;>)

Many thanks!

Nice work. I think the knob is better. The wingnut on my WFL SK bottoms out before it really tightens to my 60's Slingy bass hoop. I need to place a piece of cardboard on the hoop where the pedal tightens so it's not loose. That's just a temp fix for now till I address it better.

Do you sell rebuilt pedals outright or do you need a core pedal supplied? I have a freind who's looking for one and was going to send him your way.

Thanks -- the knob works a lot better for me...it's faster, easier on the old hands.

Any impression on the nuts used on the hinge?? Those are the lowest profile I can find, and they have to be nylon insert lock nuts so as not to pinch the pedal/frame.

I'm ALWAYS on the lookout for a better idea!

On your buddy's pedal, we can work it out however he'd prefer. I have enough stuff in the basement to do a ground up, but if he has one he'd like rebuilt, that's cool, too....

You may want to send him my regular email, wafulton5@gmail.com

That way, I'm less likely to lose track of it! I don't always check the forum messages because I can't access them from work...

Thanks again...!

I like the idea of the knob, But I'm wondering if it is too tall, like if you really stomp down on the pedal will the knob break? or will the foot plate bottom out on the knob?

I haven't had that problem, but I also ordered some that are about an 1/8th shorter, just in case.

I'm also using these on Gretsch Floating Actions, and I did run into that issue on those.

The knobs BTW are the same height as the Ludwig wing screws.

Thanks for the feedback

Thanks, I'll send him your email. He was looking for a nice used SK but thought he would be better off just getting one from you. The year or vintage of the pedal is not important to him. He just needs a good working pedal as he's not very mechanical. And I would end up doing any repairs. LOL. He's been playing DW pedals which have some worn out parts. I loaned him my SK and he loves it. He's hooked on them now.

Thanks!

That is SO cool.

I go back and forth between the SK and an early Swiv o Matic. Maybe it's just me, but vintage stuff tops the new stuff...but then again, I'm not a slamming rocker. THEY might need the heavy duty hardware

I like what you've done. The knob is a great idea and the nuts on the hinge look fine. Good work!

Thanks much --

Appreciate your input, too. I think I'll keep using those nuts unless and until I stumble across a new idea.

Again ... thanks!

You better not make too many additional improvements or I'll be sending my two back to you for some "free" upgrades. :>) Seriously, the knob is a no brainer and same with the nyloks and even replacing the roll pins with small bolts keeps the period look.

Believe it or else!
