LA Camco score....in Australia!!!

Loading...

Those of us in Australia and in the know realise that rarely will there be a bargain come up given the historically high prices we've always had here.

And I'm a Camco colllector in a country where virtually no Camcos were ever imported (and I may actually be the pre-eminent Camco collector in the country because I have two kits - though I did have three). So not a lot of bargains or Camcos to be had.

Our Craigslist equivalent is Gumtree - I've only just started using it to sell a bunch of other stuff than drums but on the rare occasions I do, I always stick in Camco. Nada....OK a Tama-Camco pedal once in a while.

Then....a 20" bass drum and 16" floor tom come up. $150. I decide I'm not interested, tip a few people, realise I'm an idiot, then contact the guy. I'm first. He's in Adelaide, I'm in Sydney - 900 miles away. So I ring him...he'll ship, he's a drummer, kind of knows Camcos might be "a thing" and wants them to go to a good home.

He tells me a guitarist friend lived above a drummer called Alan Turnbull, at one point one of this country's finest jazz players. It seems Alan died (though I've yet to see corroboration of this), the guitarist, claiming to know all about drums, goes to buy them.....gets distracted and forgets there should also be a rack tom. Drummer mate goes back later....drum is long gone.

So two drums with lots of touring mojo and a local name. He ships, they arrive....I'm surprised how he got that bass drum in its case into that tiny box.

As I open the box I realise that 16" tom looks a little smaller - about 2" smaller and the same goes for the bass drum - 18" not 20".

Now I've been having a pretty awful time recently with various ageing parent issues so this was one of those wonderful moments when something really goes right.

So I'm now the proud owner of close to a third kit with an 18" bass drum (which I'd given up on - am currently mocking one up from a modern shell - what a waste of money) and a 14" floor tom.

Questions is do I just hang on to the 18" bass drum to mix and match with my Oaklawn 12, 14, 16, 20 x 12 or try and find a maple finish LA 12" rack tom to complete the bop set.

Please send answers to VDF to my attention. Initial pix are pretty ropey and it's been so long since I've been here I've forgotten how to resize pix. They will follow. Just had to share.

Sling's right!

Here, I see more maple (same finish as mine) orphans than anything else. What a great find! Can't wait to see the pictures! Congrats!

David,

I would definitely wait for an 8x12 LA tom in natural and make a complete kit. Congrats on a great score that you almost passed on! Reminds me of another member on here that bought a super clean Oaklawn Tuxedo kit in 20/12/14 w/ matching snare in red sparkle. Took it to the Chicago Show but ran out of time to change heads before leaving so just threw in a couple of 20" heads and was going to change heads at the show. When he go to the show and went to change heads the bass drum turned out to be an 18!!!

Congratulations on the great score. I'd definitely find the tom and make it a kit. I'm sure anyone here will be glad to help get one to you when it pops up. That guy was quite a drummer. Sorry to hear that he passed.

Best of luck mate.

Should this be in the Vintage Non-USA Drums section? I'm confused...DOH

Never play it the same way once.

They ended up in good hands where they'll get the love and attention they deserve, congratulations David.

I would definitely wait for a 12" to show up.

That's gonna be some kit, can't wait to see the progress.

The fact that you found such uncommon sizes in a place where Camco's are so scarce is really wild.

But like the guys said you should be able to scare up a 12 hopefully within a reasonable amount of time, but the way this is going you might end up paying twice what you did for the other 2 peices, and finding it in Uraguay.

Congrats on you find.

No doubt! L.A. era drums were almost all in the larger rock configurations and the child size jazzettes makes me wonder how much is actual Camco beyond the badges...
