Just acquired a Gretsch cocktail set... Last viewed: 2 hours ago

...and I know diddly-squat about it :D

I got it from an auction at a memorial today for a fellow drummer & friend.

I'll get some more pics up, but I'm a lousy photographer. I can say this: The main drum is 14x24, no bottom head or any evidence of one, there's what looks like a narrow BD hoop tacked on, it looks factory.

Under the top head is a snare mechanism operated by a knob, the snares extend to about the center of the head.

The small tom is 5.5x8, five lug, with straight hoops & claws, unlike the double flanged hoop on the big drum. The head is a broken calfskin.

The thing that caught my eye about them was the dealer plaque (something not seen anymore):

Brockstein's

2211 Chenevert St

Houston, Texas

I was 18, out of school & living on my own, had a cheap drum set & lived 2 blocks from the store. I walked there to take lessons from Joe Raymer. I knew Herb Brockstein of course & some years later visited him at his Pro Mark Drumstick factory in Houston :)

Honestly though, it might be a great keepsake but I don't need it, I'd like to see what it might be worth, I bought it to help out my friend's family, didn't pay much.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I plan to spiff them up, and get them in playing condition. Some folks would add a bottom head to the large drum so that it can be played as a cocktail bass drum. I'm tempted. But, I want to clean 'em up first before making that decision. To the folks who are dead set against this, I say that, if I do make the drum two-headed, you would not know that it didn't leave the factory that way unless I told you about it.

leedybdp - I'd do the same thing. Might as well make it as useful as possible. Please share your mods and restore or whatevs on this. It's fab! Congrats.

I'm too much of a "lookee here what I did" drum nut to not share the progress reports.
