I think John had primarily four different sets that were his that he used with the Doors. His first set was a Gretsch 20,12,14 wmp and it seems he favored the supra as I never noticed ever using any other snare drum back then. Because they were touring and getting big quickly I think John has been photographed with different sets around the 1967 time frame that were most likely borrowed or part of a backline.
Mod orange and Psych red made a first appearance around June of 1967 allthough they never made it to a print ad until Ludwig drummer spring 1968 and of course they missed the 1967 catalog as it was printed in 1966. John got his second set(the mod orange downbeat) around sept 1967 as it was used on the Ed Sullivan show and it was prcatically brand new then. At some point later on probobly early 1968, John got a wmp downbeat and used it when the Doors toured Europe and later when they played the Singer Bowl. It was also used sporatically for touring in 1970 but by that time John had gotten a Ludwig standard in the single six configuration and used that for most of the 1970 tour. The Gretsch may have been used to record the first three albums but after that it was the mod orange or WMP downbeat that did the recordings.
As I mentioned before John prefered a supra and has almost always used one. I think that he has staed that he still owns a supra or two from the Doors days. Sadly the mod orange is mia. Well the floor tom is in the possesion of Vince Treynor who was the roadie back in the day. The 20 and the 12 seemed to have gone mia. I would love to know if the set is still intact one way or another.
