Is this hard? Salt Peanuts big band chart... Last viewed: 23 hours ago

This might be a bit out there but I'm trying to get this first section of Salt Peanuts in a big band setting.

Here's the mp3:

Trying to wrap my head around 6 through 12, heh.

If I'm not mistaken the first 3 bars have kind of a 6/8 feel then a 1 bar fill then it repeats then the 3rd time through its when the weirdness starts to get me.

Not sure what anyone could really do or say in a reply, just wanted to share my dilemma :D

Don't try to nail it note for note. Concentrate on where all the accented hits are and go for the feel of it. Close will be good enough and you don't have to torture yourself rushing to learn a difficult part.

Make all the hits, it'll sound fine in a band setting. People are concentrating on, listening to the horns in that number. As long as you don't make yourself stick out like a sore thumb by wandering off somewhere, you'll be fine and it'll sound great. Capture the spirit/the groove and enjoy the ride. It's jazz... improvise! :p

Of course it's hard. The tempo alone is death defying. Show of hands of those who can ride a cymbal at that meter holding the time that tighly. Nothing for respect for all of you at that level. Definitely hard to do. I'll watch in awe from the wings, thank you very much.

Hey LongJohn, that cut is killer fast. Took awhile for me to dig up who the drummer was too as I wanted to find out what pang/china he's using. Tommy Campbell, he's probably busy gigging with heavy weights and hasn't replied to my email yet :D

Hi Purdie, excellent advice, pretty much what I'm going for, not note for note as I never try to copy another cats jazz licks note for note unless it's something integral like Krupa's first 8 bars of SSS :)

Hi Dan, sorry man I know it's hard, but I think I might be making it harder than it needs to be if that makes sense :) I believe the mp3 I linked to is going about 220, the guy I'm subbing for tonight said they play the chart at about 200. I think the Dizzy be-bop version above is about 300 or more! No way I can ride my pies in full swing that fast. If going over 300 one usually has to leave off the first note of the ride notation or just play quarter notes, heh...

Here's Tommy's china, wonder if it's just a big Wuhan? Sounds so nice in that Salt Peanuts Dizzy clip.

> Hi Purdie, excellent advice,

:p One of the things I love about this forum is, once in awhile I get to 'talk music' with another drummer. That 'advice' I gave you comes from spending my youth playing in local New York city clubs and bars with a thousand different musicians/bands. The clubs are a 'sink or swim' experience. You either nail it, no matter what kind of music is being thrown at you, or the phone stops ringing and no more gigs. The advice I gave you is just tricks I picked up along the way because necessity is the mother of invention.

Hope it helped a little...

Great link VM! Perfect for explaining the be bop version of SP :) Going to check out this cats other instructional videos for sure too!

The big band chart is a bit different in that no one is doing that standard SP fill, which I find rather odd to say the least, hehe.

I know Purdie, whether it's venting about drunk band mates or getting help with a chart, VDF does it all on top of covering vintage gear :)

Thanks much guys for all the replies and help thus far!
