From mlayton

i think the wrap in the scarf joint ended in 68 when they went to the clear maple interiors.mike

I agree with Mike on this -- the wrap will NOT be in the scarf joint. I suppose there might be some "transitional" exceptions, but that went away with the painted white interiors.

I think this is probably legit, but the owner is mistaken -- it is NOT a Jazz Festival but a Pioneer, as Mike already stated. And Ludwig was known at that time for putting just about any wrap on any drum. Whatever the customer wanted!

In any event (and someone correct me if I'm wrong), wasn't the butcher block fairly common on educational drums at the time? It seems to me that I saw plenty of that particularly in elementary schools music/band rooms during the 70s...

Butcher block was a Formica-like counter surface that was commercially available. So I imagine it was a lot cheaper than precisions wraps. I don't know if those savings were passed on to the customer, but in my neck of the woods it was always duco or two color sparkles for highschool bands.

I like Drums...
1963 Ludwig Downbeat Champagne Sparkle
1964 Leedy (Slingerland) Blue n Silver Duco
1964 Ludwig Club Date Sparkling Silver Pearl
1966 Ludwig Super Classic Sparkling Silver Pearl
1968 Gretsch round badge modern jazz orange stain
1972 Slingerland 85N Pop outfit Light Blue Pearl
1976 Ludwig Vistalite clear

Yeah, I got to thinking about what I said, and after more 'head scratchin' I think it was in the later 70s when Ludwig came out with some cheaper "educational" drums that were finished in a natural maple and not the Butcher Block, as I was thinking when I posted earlier.

So, I have no problems being corrected.

I think it was jccabinets who had come up with one of those educator drums from Ludwig a few months back and had posted some pictures. I'm too lazy to look the thread up though...

That is a cool drum. The only Ludwig snare in that finish I have ever seen was the one Alan Dawson played. Its definitely a pioneer.
