Hey guys, wondered if you could help me confirm the identity of this drum. Is this a true black beauty snare?

Thanks!

It does make for an attractive drum, but that finish would obviously reduce the value. This is selling less than a typical BB but I think it should run more along the cost of a Supra which would be between $350-$400 or so it seems these days. If all you care about is having a BB drum and not the resale value, this would be a cheaper way to get one. I would confirm that it was a BB first. If what you really want is a 6.5" BB I would pass.

I often look for snare drums with a bit of cosmetic damage that can be purchased at a reduced cost. My 6.5 BB has a small scuff near the badge and as such, I picked it up for $325. This drum might fall into that category. Maybe now it is a Bronze Beauty?

i actually like the finish on it. agree that it brings the value down some. really has a nice look though.

Agreed. Also, I believe my estimates on a Supra were actually for a 5" and not a 6.5" for whatever that is worth.

when he says, "Some black is still visable in the crevases", he may either be trying to convince someone its a b.b. or he may not know.

you would need to take off a lug to see the edge of a lug hole to see what the shell is.

i say that because that's powder coating color. i sent out many drum parts to have that finish at one of my old jobs. and in the pics the finish is shiny, so if someone did strip a b.b., it would look the way it does.

not only that, i mistakenly cleaned my old b.b. and took off a small part of nickel, exposing the finish underneath...not down to the bare shell.

also, the "B" is upside down. it doesn't look right to me.

Well I am looking to get a black beauty sometime in the future. Thought this would be a more affordable way to go if it was one. I wanted to see if anyone was able to ID it before I went to try it out. I actually kinda like the finish... haha

The upside down B is legit, I have one on by hammered BZ.

The interior looks like the traditional BB finish to me (based on the the lower quality images).

To me the finish looks like some "antiquing" either by chemical or mechanical processes or a combination of both. Looks like the snare for sale had either a brushed on finish or a chemical applied and a part of the reaction color was scoured of like this one shown on Hubbard-Hall:

http://www.hubbardhall.com/chemical-apps-metal-antiquing.htm

Or as described here on ehow...

http://www.ehow.com/how_12043467_antiquing-brass-black-paint-water.html

.... and then was re-lacquered after what ever method. This drum may have been refinished as the BB from the late 70's/80's doesn't always look so good after this much time has passed (even if it wasn't abused, they can suffer from flaking, pitting/rusting and just an odd color cast)

Either way I'm not sure I would run after it unless it was even cheaper. It doesn't have the tone control and there was no badge in evidence - and if it doesn't exist rather than just not pictured, I wouldn't go near it unless you get it dirt cheap IMHO.
