Is it just me ??

Hi all.. Just acquired a used but good condition Gibraltar universal back rest that attaches to the drum stool height adjuster.. Now, is it me or is this bloody thing annoying ?.. When i'm at a gig, the last thing i need is to fumble, and constantly tighten, loosen, and adjust something which i thought was supposed to be quick and easy.. In order to attach the back rest, i have to fumble behind the screw nut, hold it with a wrench, just tighten to the wing nut so that it is fastened securely to the height adjustment post.. Is this normal ?

To be fair, i just attached it to one of my Gibraltar cymbal stands just to see how secure it really is, and i didn't actually use it on the throne..

I know that throne is different, having a spiral thread which makes up the height adjustment, so i have no idea how it's going to go once i actually attach it to the adjustment post.. Has anyone had any experience or annoyances with this product ? You can click on the link to see the product in question.. Thanks in advance for the replies..

I've never come across in all the years I've played a truly failsafe yet fully flexible design in drum thrones. Always something loosening, always something moving about losing position. Tried Hydraulic ones that lost the pressure. I've never really been quite happy with this piece of what is really vital equipment. There's a big black hole in the design world of thrones. Now this would be a good one for DW to sort out with they're constant innovation aspirations.

As for back rest, I've thought about it over the years but thats not for me. As you say even more fiddling, and even more weight to haul about. And I don't really sit back when I play anyway.

I've had very good luck out of my roc n soc hydraulic tractor seat throne, over 10 years of heavy use. not problem one.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

I have over 20 on my Roc n Soc. I paid all the money but it's held up. The piano stool type adjustment system is primitive. No real innovations in throne technology for many years.

I have a new Gibraltar back rest, finally added a backrest after 30 years, had to use pliers to tighten that baby down!

Thought I needed it, but turns out I only use it when not playing. It annoys me more trying to use the backrest while playing but great for between charts and down time etc :)

Found it!!

I used to have a similar rest that was also faulty... All the stress gets distributed at the wrong spot, the downtube

I now have a Tama throne and added an HTB5 backrest, which is bolted to the bottom of the actual seat, and works well

See if one will fit yours

Thanks to everyone for the all the input.. I see that there are more negatives than positives with this type of back rest, so I've decided to give it to my big brother as one of his B-day gifts..He recently started playing after almost 40 years..He now rehearses with his buddies from his old band and gig once in a while at the social club where they rehearse at.. Plus , his throne isn't one of the best ones, so he could use it to give himself better support..That and the fact that he turns 60 in 2 weeks, will keep his 60 yr old back more comfy ;))..
