Is it blasphemy? Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Is it total blasphemy to turn my 1965(ish) 15x10 NOB Snare drum into a floor tom?

Im in the midst of the cosmetic makeover I promised it, cleaning all the nickle back to shiny goodness.

It doesn't fit in sound wise with my kit anymore (plus its just too damn loud) when played as a snare.

I'd love a 15" tom to fill the void between my 13" and 16" toms.

Other thoughts are Bop Bass drum conversion to it for a traveling kit.

Or should I finish 'er up and sell it to fund something else?

Drum in question:

It's old and all together. Let it be and let it pay for something else. A 15" tom? Is that an animal? Cool drum.

It can be tricky switching it to a tom and getting the sound out of it you want. Could also run into tom tuning issues if the snare beds are very deep.

Beautiful drum!

I have the same issue with a couple old very large snare drums - they don't fit with my kits as a snare drum. But, what I do is very carefully take what I can off the drums when I want to use them as toms. I usually use a snare cradle as a stand and that's worked fine so far. I remove the snares and throwoff - nothing that will 'alter' the drum in any way other than making it more convenient as a tom = no rattles etc.

If you do that - you can use your Ludwig as a tom and when and if the time comes for it to be a snare drum for you or someone else you just have to put it back together. Just an option.....

some say drilling up marchers is ok. but if they are complete and nice, i have trouble doing it. i took a conventional snare stand and cut it down to put a 12x15 marching snare in it and use as a floor tom. dont even have to take your snare wires or anything off. they sound great. just had to tune mine down lower than the snare tunings...

Thanks gang, she is a pretty beast I agree.

She (Bertha, as in Big Bertha) is a complete animal as a snare drum, tonal range, projection and even sensitivity are amazing.

The odd ball feature is there are NO snare beds cut into the shell!!!

I do have a spare snare stand so it would be easy to stand it that way vs. a mount of any type.

I initially bought it because it was odd, I needed a snare drum and the wrap fade matched my kit. :D

I'll clean her up and see what she tells me as I go...or if there is interest I'll sell her or trade for something fun.

If you sell it, the buyer will just strip the hardware to resell it bit by bit. If it matches your kit, take off the hardware like Kona said and USE IT.

the wrap matches my kit, but I have Classic lugs on my kit vs. the Long Mach Lugs on this drum.

I spent yesterday polishing all of the lugs, the wrap and doing some clean up/repair work on the tone control.

Had to run the screw through the correct die to clean up a buggered thread.

Looks amazing so far!

If its all original keep it that way. I think you won't have a hard time unloading it, pretty cool drum!

Another possibility - a RIMS floor tom cradle?

Then you get legs, though not very-vintagey.
