Inherited vintage Ludwigs - no idea how to identify (photos included)

Loading...

Hey all!

I am pretty dang clueless about what I have my hands on, and don't expect it to be anything special, but would just like some help identifying what I have before I sell them.

My husband was given a set of Ludwigs by his uncle years ago. He had bought them in the 70s, and they do have the blue/olive badge. They seem to be in real nice condition. From what I can tell they are what's called "butcher block" finish. He had told us they were John Bohman styled, but I don't think that's accurate because the kick is only a 24" and not a 26".

The sizes seem to be as follows:

24" - 1558727

16" - 1235386

13" - 1228760

12" - (no number)

*the metal logo pieces on these drums have a number listed under them. Are they serial numbers? Would a serial number to help identify more about the kit be listed anywhere I am missing?

The snare is not original, and neither is the hardware or cymbals! The shells themselves seem to be in nice condition though. The 12" tom is mismatched finish and is maple instead, but seems to be the same kit style & logo & he said he bought them in the same era. I've attached photos for you guys. Could you help me figure out what exactly I have and how much would be a fair going price? I have cymbals & stands too, but since those aren't really part of the vintage kit I didn't bother including those.

I've attached some photos and if there is anything more I can do to make this easier to identify, let me know! Thank you all so much. I'm a bit lost.

youre right on track. those are 70's Ludwigs in butcher block wrap. if the center bass mount is original, there might be a missing tom somewhere. that might explain the non butcher block drum. might wanna show us the snare and cymbals. they can sometimes be as valuable/more valuable as the drums.

The numbers on the badges are the serial numbers. They can be used to figure out the approximate year of manufacture but they do not contain any other information (Ludwig themselves did not keep any records of serial numbers nor did the numbers encode any sort of information about the drum).

They look to be some nice drums. I see the bass drum has four spurs which is a neat plus. The finish (Butcher Block Cortex on all but the smaller tom which is maple cortex) is somewhat polarizing as people tend to either love it or hate it but the ones that love it seem to outnumber the haters (although I'm not too fond of it myself).

you can check completed sales on ebay. they usually give a good indicator of what the market is currently doing. good luck!

The serial numbers can tell us more than the year – sometimes they can also let us know if a kit was "born together" or not.

You have a 70's butcher block kit that's missing a couple parts. The bass drum was from a different year than the toms. The non-butcher block tom is probably from 1969 or 70 (they sometimes didn't have serial numbers during this period).

It's hard to say how much to ask for, especially when we don't know about the snare and cymbals. But if you were just gonna throw these 4 drums up on craigslist? If you want to sell them fast, 700. If not, 900. If you want more, sell them individually on ebay.

The 24" kick should make this thing move pretty quickly.

Yeah $700 seems like a good price. Excellent sounding drums. Butcher blocks are always a tough sell and have a limited following.

Great little kit. The 24" is a great plus.

That is exactly what you have.. However, your 12" tom is not Butcher Block, and is a Maple Cortex wrap from what i can tell from the pics. As far as value goes, the butcher block finish is becoming more and more collectible lately, and can easily fetch a cool $1000, even though the finish is not really sought after, but a collector would probably pay that much for your set. However, it would have to be without the maple cortex 12" tom , as it is not part of the original set.. If you're looking to get rid of it for a decent price, then you can get anywhere between $800-900.

Anything lower would be an insult to a finely manufactured drum kit, no matter how aesthetically unappealing it is..
