Information with Gretsch Key Holder

Loading...

Hello Gretsch fans!

I recently acquired a beautiful Renown 57 snare drum for my collection. It's finished in Motor City Red and looks great! I was thinking about customizing it to reflect a more "vintage" look with the addition of the Gretsch dual-pad tone control and pop-in key holder.

Can any owners of Gretsch snare drums tell me what diameter hole is required for mounting of the key holder? I'd also appreciate knowing how long the threaded shaft is, so I can see if it will go through the 10-ply shell. I realize this would mean taking yours apart for proper measurements. Your help with this is greatly appreciated.

I've never owned any Gretsch drums, new or vintage, and felt the addition of the Renown 57 snare drum would look excellent in my collection.

Thanks!

Mark

Hey Mark, If i recall the hole is 1/2" around but i don't think it will work on a 10 ply shell the threaded shaft is about 1/2" long also..I can double check this for you later today i post it i have alot of these key holder's out in the shop...Mikey

Hi Mikey,

I had a feeling that the 10-ply Gretsch shell might be too thick. Let me know once you check those measurements. The drum is at my girlfriend's house and I'll be there this weekend. I'll remove the top head and measure the shell thickness.

Hi Mark, I did check for you the hole is 1/2" around. The threaded piece is too short to used on a 10 ply shell, you need room for the inside washer and nut to go on....Mikey

You could possibly thread the shell and screw the key holder into the wood directly... That thick it should work fine.

Just a thought if you have to have it.

You would drill under size and tap the shell the proper thread (Mikey777 can probably tell you the thread pitch). Tapping wood is tricky, but not impossible.

You could also add a drop of (super glue) to keep it in place, but a drop of wood glue will work just as well and you will have a better chance removing the insert later if you need to.

Thinking about it the thick shell will probably cause problems with the muffler install as well, but maybe not.

Mark, I'm fairly sure Mikey is correct, the threaded part of the key holder is not that deep, threading the shell as suggested above will not help any at all, the threaded part of the key holder is inside the shell interior.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

So true Mark, Threading the shell will not work on these Gretsch key holders their is a somewhat "U" shape piece of wire that fits into two slot's on the side of the hold that holds the key into place.....Mikey

The factory puts a "square" counter bore around the hole to allow for the retainer clip in the keyholder to do its job. However with that said, they will only work on the standard thickness 6-ply USA made shells. Everyone else is correct on this one, the threaded part of the holder is not long enough for it to fit the shell properly. It just ain't gonna work without doing some serious modification/damage to the shell. I say leave it be. And to be honest, although it looks cool, the Gretsch drumkey holder is a pain in the a$$.

I was not aware of the square bore in there to clear the wire... Sorry for the bad idea!Sailing2
