What's the general consensus amongst drummers on this forum as to a good general overall size "workhorse" kit for playing above interms of kick size &snare&tom size?.I've got a 70s-80s Yamaha 26" kick (which WONT fit into my car ! ) :(, 9x13" Corder rack tom(mounted on a snare stand) &14x14" Ludwig B/O COW (chrome on wood) finish 70s-80s floor tom &a 14x6.5 Pearl steel free floater.

The answer is any kit well tuned and with a bass drum in maybe the 20" range or larger. The sound guy at any venue can make your $10k kit sound terrible or your $1k kit sound amazing.

Start with a well tuned kit. After that I would think a 26", while fun and certainly appropriate for specific things, would not be my vote for a really versatile kick drum. You should also consider the venues and situations in which you are playing.

22" is always a defacto standard but 20's work great too and both are versatile and generally fit in most cars. I like the idea of either having multiple kits to choose from or a kit with several drums so you can choose what works best for a particular gig. For example, playing a smaller club, or in a lighter ensemble, a 14" floor tom might be just the thing. When playing in a heavier situation a 16" floor tom might be better.

The trend I am seeing with a lot of rock and roots rock players is 6.5" deep snares.

Good luck.

The best set up is a vintage..20" 16" 12" (14" COB snare)

With great skins & tuned..

Having 2 L cymbal mounts off the bass drum is key...!

One for the ride & crash or splash..!

This saves bringing lots of heavy CYM stds..lolol..

Also I use a hard plastic Golf transport container to move my hardware/thone around with..

It's tall,narrow, has a handle & wheels to up/dwn strs...

22/12/13/16 is my choice. Less effort behind the kit for me. $00.02
