I've been waiting for one of these for a while now and I can't see someone else wanting this for $2300 which is what I am willing to pay for it - but we shall see what happens in the next few hours.....

It's a re-wrap....and the re-wrapper did not seek out era-correct wrap to do the job at the time. But....it probably wasn't a concern at the time. The way we treat 'vintage' drums has evolved. A drum like this might have only brought a few 100 dollars not so long ago. But with the internet especially...eBay...prices go up when there's competition.

An Aside (o/t?)

I used to go into my favourite secondhand record store and find the odd jem price-wise now and then. Now...you can't buy a record in that store without the owner checking it out online first. He will still give me great deals....but gone are the days when I can pick up a 50cent record and find out it's worth $50. What I'm saying is that we mostly have to pay market price for a drum......there are exceptions though.

It appears that you do NOT have this in the bag - as that 2nd place bidder could easily jump up and outbid you. Best blessings on the bidding.....

(I don't believe in luck, just degrees of blessing)

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Hope it works out for you Kona. Beautiful piece of craftsmanship by Gretsch in their partnership with Gladstone.

I was thinking more or less down the lines of Drummerjohn333, having been beaten a few times when I thought there would be nobody else willing to jump on my bid at the last moment.

Last time was a red onyx Rogers Citadel 20,12,14 (67-68 catalog kit) that went right up the ladder to just under $3k. I dropped out in the lower $2000 range, but had put that on it from the first moment. The winner seemed to have asked the question up front, "Is this a collectable drum set." (That made me wonder a bit??????).

Anyway, the seller was putting every remark on the site and confirmed that it was highly collectable, so about then I knew that someone was going to go until there was nobody else left in the field. Given that I had gotten the same exact kit in jet black for less than a third of that cost not long before, and got the jet black Dyna the next day for $1k, I figured any more $$ on the red onyx kit was pure insanity.

Interestingly, I had owned that same kit in the early 90's and had paid the outrageous figure of $800. I sold it for the same price a few months later when the pearl cracked on the bass drum. Some inflation is always expected on vintage items, but you are right on that idea that eBay has changed things dramatically for us.

I would be more concerned that if I posted my max bid, the seller might create a shill account to ensure that I would pay that full amount.

I guess I did tip my hand a little early here but it doesn't look like there are many that are interested in paying more than $2500 for this drum from what I can see. I may be wrong though.
