I really don't get it! Spizzochino Drums

Loading...

Part of the value of the kit is its craftsmanship, the limited number of them available, and now that Roberto has passed, its eternal rarity. Value is so subjective, and perhaps to a purist and Spizz aficionado, this kit would be a real treasure.

I've played a Spizz kit, and in all honesty, it didn't sound any better than a well-tuned, nice kit from pretty much any manufacturer. I know that most companies don't offer metal shells in those sizes so there's not an exact comparison, but I didn't find the drums had any special sound. Honestly, I didn't like them.

In terms of it being several times better than a $1500 kit, the answer is no. This is a kit for a collector, not a player. And I know how that works - I have several drums that are more collectable than they are playable, and rarer than the Spizz kit, but I promise I didn't pay $15k for them!

Thanks for the replies all.

You are of course right Bermuda, and that being said I understand the price attributed to those little 50's/60's Gretsch kits because of that sound and rarity. They are also beautiful pieces of art in my opinion.

I also get the Spizz cymbal sound, how he has crafted the old K sound more successfully than anyone else in modern times(inc Z), and I wouldn't bat an eyelid to them soaring way over 2k. They are little pies of genius. He was an artist.

The kit though for me looks experimental, somewhat home made even, and would be fitting on the set of Waterworld or something. BUT as it has his signature on it, and as proven by many famous artists throughout time the signature alone is an investment.

Personally if I had the money I would prefer to buy a little prize 3ply Gretsch Jazz kit from Steve Maxwell and collect a few Spizz cymbals to go with it. Now that would be Jazz heaven.

p.s. Isn't it ironic, these instruments represent the best there is for the Jazz sound and are the most exclusive, but Jazz musicians and particularly drummers are notoriously beyond poor. Go figure!

He had that kit priced around $10K until Roberto died...

Never play it the same way once.

He also strikes me as a complete tool, to be polite about it.

Zoiks!! Guess this is a case of art appreciating, posthumously. That's a lot of scratch!!

All that work to bend the shells, make them nice-looking with the cool tubes and the vent-holes look like poopy-doot. No pretty badge? Like a mini "Spizz" cymbal with his name, or something? However, the drums are interesting looking, to me. I like the looks of the FT leg mount system, too.

Good luck, bidders!
