What an awesome score! Congrats! Wouldn't you love to know the history behind that drum....maybe it was part of the house drum set at Birdland or the Cafe Bohemia. Man, the picture you took of that drum still in the shipping box says it all! You must be soooo happy! Enjoy!

If you don't mind me asking......as I don't know much about the Gretsch stuff and love to learn.....

How rare are these snares?

Were they only made during a short timeframe?

I have to ask,

Why is there a pipe clamp around the throw ?? and How are you gonna use it if that clamp locks it all up ??

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

I am pretty wound up hardbopman. Seriously happy to have it here.

Now I need to decide how to clean it up. Can't wait to hear it either, but it will be a little while...

Don't mind at all. That's what the forum is for!

I believe they are quite rare although I don't have production numbers fo course.... I will need to consult someone wiser (read a lot older ) than me!! I have personally seen two like this drum. The other was for auction on ebay about 2003-2004ish and was missing the MRM tag but was otherwise in good condition I believe. It had the same (correct) throw off in place. I wonder if it isn't actually owned by a friend of mine in NYC now as he describes the exact drum I remember in the auction.... His drum is dated mid to late FEB 1950 as I recall. If it is definitely not the same then I know of three like this drum all in Oriental White Pearl. I was outbid on that drum back then The Microsensitive throw off replaced the Renown throw off (the one on my drum) but I don't know when this occurred as I have not seen any catalogs between my 1939 catalog and 1954 catalog to verify changes.... A redesigned with the newer "streamlined" lugs rather than the Gladstone lugs (seen here) appears in the 1954 catalog of Downbeat magazine, at which point the drum was the Broadkaster "Max Roach" model, and by the 1961 catalog Max's name quit appearing in the catalog description of the drum. It was instead listed simply as the Progressive Jazz Model. Max did, of course, still appear in the catalog as an endorser but his namesake drum no longer bore his name. Seemingly the Max Roach model only lasted about 10 years before evolving into the PJM.
