That strangely looks like a slingerland muffler. But everything else looks great. I'm jealous! I'm still working on a deal for the one that Oddball put a picture up of from 26. You must post sound files when you get it set up. Mike can be a good resource on this.
I clicked 'Buy It Now' - Questions re- Super Ludwig Snare Last viewed: 26 minutes ago
This Super Ludwig popped up a couple hours ago and I just couldn't resist. I have some concerns: 1) The two tone painted shell looks original, but I can't find any catalog reference to this paint treatment. Is it original?2) The strainer guard is missing. Anybody got one? 3) I can find only a few pictures of this era Ludwig with a muffler/dampener. They all look like the one on this drum, but don't show up in the catalogs. Is the strainer an add-on? 4) Today is Wednesday and this is my 3rd snare purchase of the week. Is this what addiction feels like?http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200772728485#ht_500wt_1075ThanksJim
1. Check the grommet and see if it has been futzed with...if it looks good then maybe you have a special order paint job.
2. You need 2 snare guards plus clips/screws. One set of originals go for 300.00-400.00...Bill Wanser WanserPB@aol.com makes the repros for 150.00-200.00 (I think) as does Adrian at AK Drums in Italy.
3. You mean is the "tone control" an add-on? Tone controls didn't show up in the L&L catalogs until 1932-33. That's a late 30s-early 40s Slingerland tone control. You may be able to switch out that tc for an L&L tc of the era as I think that the hole patterns are similar...of-the-era L&L tone controls are in the 35.00-50.00 range.
4. Three in a week, that's all? :)
A few more observations:
1. You will need 2 thumbscrews to secure the 2 sliding pieces (shown inside the drum in one of the photos) unless they are hidden from view in that photo...probably 15.00-25.00 each.
2. Super wires are available... Bill Wanser does the repros, I have the harness and rolling pin but he does the wire attachment.
3. You drum is probably pre-1929 as the 1929-30 Ludwig Supers changed the Ludwig-Super from engraved (yours) to stamped.
4. For a few hundred bucks you can get this drum restored and looking good! I have all of the aforementioned parts so let me know if you need help... mike@curottodrums.com
My vote is for you to go for it!

The muffler is not important & neither is the finish. If the Supersensitive mechanism is in working order, you got an excellent snare. The muffler can be easily changed out to an original, & I would clean up the finish , the best I could, & leave it alone.
That muffler has 3 horizontal holes. One for the muffler and two for the mounting screws, so it can't be swapped for Ludwig without extra holes.

This has a one positive side: you can always sell the stuff and get your money back.
But if I were you...I wouldn't.
Conclusion: You are addicted :)
Congratulations on your awesome snare !

Do some of the things Mike was saying and make it playable. I would just leave the tone control as is and play the hell out of that thing. It's beautiful!
I agree. Buy it, clean it up and make it playable and USE IT. It's a really cool drum.

Thank you. I will contact you when the drum is in hand. I also need a wood vent grommet for the Leedy I bought on Monday. It was discussed on DFO a couple months back. Do you recall?

That muffler has 3 horizontal holes. One for the muffler and two for the mounting screws, so it can't be swapped for Ludwig without extra holes.
So does an L&L tone control...

My kinda thinking!!!
Great drum mate - play the **** off it and enjoy :-D
Meat.
Thanks for the clarification. I am very pleased to learn that the holes may not be extra after all. Cooper's website has quite a bit of early snare tone control info, including the attached picture. The current tone control is clearly not Ludwig, as others have correctly noted. Once the drum arrives, I'll measure the hole spacing and determine if an original Ludwig tone control will fit.
Thanks
Jim
