How Many Of Us On VDF Are Lefty Players

Loading...

Just a curious question here as i`m a lefty.Ian Paise was a complete lefty playing left lead on hi-hat with right on the snare, but his left foot was on bass and right on hi-hat(full lefty).Guess you`d say i`m only half lefty as i play as you righties do up top but below i`m backwards like Ian(left on bass/right on hi-hat) but i play open and not crossed. It`s like looking in a mirror at the kit to the righties.Weird i know... but it`s always worked for me.How many full lefties vs half lefties are here on the forum? Now that i`ve got you all totally confused, lol. And why the heck do some of us play this way anyway???

Play full lefty, with occasional openhanded playing depending how I feel at the moment.

Left foot - bass-

Right foot hihat

Usually crossover sticks on hihat/snare playing.

Ride cymbal sits between hihat and tom - basically the same bass drum/ride cymbal setup as righty players.

full lefty. thankfully my first drum teacher (which didn't last long) did not try to make me play right handed like many teachers do.

My teacher made me play right handed and cross. I naturally (and mostly) play open hand on a right handed kit with the ride on the left.

It's funny..... some beats are more natural for me to play open and some beats are more natural for me to play cross. Some songs, I switch in the middle of the song or as the beat changes.

IMO, it has improved my independence over playing just one way.

Great topic...

Funny thing I learnt about 12yrs back...

I was going thru some old 8mm film of. Me from 1972/74 (born in 70)..

It's shows me playing with our old dog, running around, riding my old Big wheel and running up to meet my dad,mom,grandfather,.....Each time I reached to take there hand or patt the dog. Or pickup my big wheel......I used my Left hand..?

After watching this for awhile...I was in awe...

I looked over at my dad...and before I asked. Him the question ...he says,....

Oh ya, you were a lefty....yr grandfather couldn't have that. So we always taught you how to write, throw, etc ,etc with yr right hand...

Man, that really explains A lot...

Cause....up here in Canada we play Hockey like. You Americans play Baseball..

So I write with my right..

hockey I'm Left..

I golf either left,right.

Hit the ball either right,left

Catch with either left,right...but I throw better with my right..!

Hahahahahaha....lasty...for the drums..

I'm a rightly...but I do play with my hands crossed or separately...and I've played several times in a lefty setup...( my feet made the switching right away)..

My hands took a song or two but...as long as we weren't doing any Neil Peart /Rush...

I was ok...mmmmmmm

Bet i'ld make a great Lover..! Sorry Canadian humour (so is the spelling).. Hahaha

Question from a "righty" to you "lefties":

Do you play matched grip or traditional? And if traditional, which hand assumes which grip?

Just curious.
