I read an article about a guy who said he had a bunch of vintage kits and snares, and lost everything in those floods they had in Tennessee. He was saying that if he hadn't hoarded all those drums in his basement then they'd be out making music instead of ruined. Anyway I'm wondering what's the difference between a collector and a hoarder? What about restoring a kit and then keeping it as a collectors item instead of making music with it. Shouldn't all those kits be making music somewhere? How many kits should you have stored up in a room somewhere anyway?

To me a collector of anything is a hoarder right? The way i look at it i don't see a drum collector of drums just collecting because they are drums.I just had to move from the shop and house to get a bigger place.
My home shop was 2,500 sq feet and the house was 7.500 sq feet move into a 4,500sq foot shop and a 10,000sq foot house to hold some of my drums. That's up in northern cal but i also have a 3,500 sq foot house and 4,000sq foot warehouse of drums in southern cal these drums are the rented out sets ete
So to reply to how many set's should one have stored up in a room well i have over 500 set's 100 are M.I.J. set's,500 snare drums150 are M/I/J, and 600 cymbals most are vintage 1930's-70's.but them again alot of the drums are rented out to studio's so i would say most are played sometime's.Then all the drums that iam looking for match's for...

500 drum sets. Five Hundred Drum Sets. That's at least 2000 drums. I can't comprehend those figures. Has anyone ever done a TV show on you? Serious question. Would you do one?
IMO a hoarder is a person that collects beyond the means of storage. If you have drums taking up every square inch of space in your home, you may be a hoarder!
I'm on the verge of becoming a hoarder as I have just enough space for my drums. But one more drum and they will start spilling over into our living space!

I have 12 (maybe 13) drum kits. 6 of them get used on gigs. 60-65 snare drums (get a different number everytime I count them). About 8 of the snares get used regularly. The rest of the snares get cycled, I also go to a once a week Jam Session and use a different snare every week slowly working through the pile. I have around 20 cymbals and a unknown quantity of stands and hardware. I think of myself as a collector, my kids and grandkids call me a hoarder and my wife calls me a Drum Junk Dealer!
Dofan54 has the correct description of a hoarder. I have 13 drum sets and a few orphans along with a handful of snares. This obsession started only two years ago when I decided to get back into drumming after a 20 year break. I have drums all over the house but they are not in anyone’s way. I was lucky to find them for very cheep prices. I am able to have five kits set up and ready to play any given minute. I have my Slingerlands and an old Pearl Modern jazz kit set up in out spare bedroom, ready to go. I have my Rogers set up in a space that is next to our dinning room, know one has complained yet. And my Super Classics are in my office. In our future rec-room AKA drum room, I have my Fibes drums set up. This room is where I will rotate the drums every few months. So all of my drums get played, only by me but if I ever join a band I will have plenty to choose from for the gigs. I often wonder, what have I done? Well, I look at like this, 15 years from now I will be 65 and that might be a good time to sell most of them and take a nice trip somewhere. But in the meantime I will play and enjoy working and tuning my drums.
So I personally don’t think there is a limit on how many drums you should have.
Thank you!

I am working on the eighth drum set now... I have them all set up and on display.
They can be played at anytime. I have eight complete sets of hardware and cymbals also. I am bordering on hoarding. But i am the envy of everyone in town!...i also collect basses but tht is a whole different story!
at one time i had 10 kits and 12 snares now just 1 and 1
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp
once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
How many is too many? How many are there? How many are sitting in peoples garages and basements,or on the roadside on dump day?Or in the church basement under the old furniture? It's the individual's call.I have around 8,I think...Burger Kin

Hi Mikey777, remember me? Man those are really impressive numbers. Two huge houses and 2 big warehouses. Man, I am impressed. And 500 sets? Holy cow! I am just amazed there is that much money to be made in selling old drum parts. But guys, don't go embarrassing Mikey by saying he should be on a TV show. He's not the type that would want to be in the limelight or boast about himself like that. Have a great Easter Mikey. Are you planning on loading up your truck and handing out drum sets to needy children while dressed up like the Easter Bunny? Just curious.
