How late were Black Panther Ludwigs made?

Loading...

anyone know about what year this wrap was discontinued?

Found a kit with a 22x16, 12x13 & 16x16 with B/O badges.

The tom mount says late 70's early 80's.

I'm going to look at this week.

What do you guys think?

Thanks much!

1983 was the final production run for Black Panther, and their introduction was in 1968, with Mitch Mitchell of Jimi Hendrix possibly being the first drummer to ever have a kit. Seeing as the one in the pic has a power tom,

i'm assuming that kit is from anywhere between 1979 to '83.

Yes, the Mod orange kits weren't big sellers at that time, so they rewrapped them in black panther and sold them like that.. Anyone who gets a hold of a kit should always check if the mod orange wrap is underneath, cause if it is, it's worth twice as much as the actual Black Panther, but the Black Panther itself is a rare wrap and beginning to bring in some decent collector grade prices.

Wrong color I think. Citrus Mod is the wrap that sometimes is underneath Black Panther, although I've heard of White Marine Pearl and "finished" Maple underneath too. I've not yet seen a mod orange under panther.

Bun E is correct. It is citrus mod and I would be very surprised to see it under any black panther sets from the 60's. Citrus mod was new in 1968 and I think Ludwig gave it a little time to try and sell before realizing that they were sitting on that color because people were not buying it. I'm sure the decsion was made sometime in 1970-71 to cover them as Ludwig would have been sitting on extra shells taking up space. I have never seen ANY other color under black panther except citrus mod. That certainly does not mean it did'nt happen just that in the many examples I have seen, they were all citrus.

So Black panther was available through out the 70's then.

I did see a catalog shot of it in 76's catalog after doing some digging.

The kit in question is late apparently late 70's early 80's due to power tom size & hardware arm mount in pic.

I appreciate all the feedback.
