How I spent my summer vacation.... Last viewed: 8 minutes ago

Every couple years, my wife and I drive to New Brunswick, Canada to visit relatives. Several years ago, we were driving down a little country road along the St Johns River and accidentally stumbled upon the Sabian plant (Actually, it's just three, unassuming red buildings that could pass as farm storage). Here's the Google street view:

Since discovering this place, I've tried to visit it on every trip. We were fortunate to get a tour of all the operations in all buildings, and they allowed me to photograph almost every operation. In the small barn-like buildings across the street from the main office and warehouse, we saw the first stages of cymbal production:

Here's the blank ingots that will each be turned into a cymbal

Next is the process of heating, rolling, and tempering the blanks into flat sheets

Next to the furnaces and rolling presses is where one guy punches the center hole

Once the hole is punched, the flat is placed on a cutter which trims the flat into a perfect circle

Now the same guy who punched the holes places the flat on a large press which forms the bell and profile of the cymbal

Leaving the little building where the metal is tempered and shaped, our guide brought us across the street to the main building where the finishing and warehousing is done.

Lathing and polishing room (our guide asked me not to take a picture of the big robotic polishing machine).

Next, our guide (pictured below) brought us into the storage warehouse (or vault) which is huge and packed with finished cymbals. He assumed I was a drummer from my Sabian T-shirt and handed me a pair of sticks to start hitting anything I wanted. That's me tapping some pretty nice pies.

Oh, in the center picture above, you can see three women in the background. It's their sole job to apply the lettering and logos to the cymbals, a process our guide asked me not to photograph.

Thanks guys, but here's where it really gets interesting. Off the main warehouse vault is a little 12x12 vault they have facetiously labeled "Area 51". This is where they store prototypes and experimental effects cymbals, along with their exclusive "high-end" products. Our guide told us that Sabian's contracted endorsers are invited into this room to play with anything they like (and walk out with it!). Here's me in front of "Area 51".

I asked the guide if I could take pictures inside this room, and he said I could as long as I didn't touch anything. He even put on a pair of cotton gloves before entering so he could handle some of these nice toys. Here's some shots inside "Area 51". Note that most of these item are not labeled and don't have the logos applied.

There's so much more I saw and photographed, but I think you get the idea... cymbal heaven. Hope you enjoyed me sharing pics of my summer vacation.

Thank you. Wow. I feel like I've taken the tour. Wonder what "Level 5 Clearance Required" entails...?

Thanks for posting the pics... A tour like that would be the cream on top of a nice vacation... Love to visit there if ever I have the opportunity. Looks to be spotlessly clean given the nature of the operation... And a timely thread for me to see, having purchased my first ever Sabian only yesterday..

Cheers

John
