Hey gents.. Just thought i'd start a thread out of curiosity.. With the arrival of spring, also comes "spring cleaning", and possible hidden treasures, "condemned to trash treasures" ignorantly being cast aside for an unfortunate demise, and of course, the fluky,"awesome scores".. I was wondering what most of you do to scope out your potential vintage drum scores, besides checking out local classifieds such as Craigslist, Kijiji (Canada) Reverb.com , etc. We all know that sidewalk sales, garage sales, pawnshops, flea markets, antique shops, and trash day, all have potential to find that one gem of a drum, cymbal, or if we're incredibly lucky, a full kit.. If there are also any other unorthodox methods any of you may have to find vintage drums, or have found any in unassuming or inconspicuous way, let's hear it !
Hot to scope for vintage drums Last viewed: 6 hours ago
I'm always going in the good wills and and looking for the rummage sales etc
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp
once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
My wife is a picker and ebay seller http://stores.ebay.com/Michigan-Mid-Mod?_rdc=1 so whenever she comes across drum related stuff at the estate sales and thrift stores I get a call. Makes it easy on me. ;) So far I've gotten a few acrolites and zildjian cymbals and most recently a small group of pipe band drums which are getting refurbed and listed. Marching drums aren't quite as desirable as kit drums but they will sell if you are patient. I buy every acrolite she runs across (and there's lots out there) and those babies sell instantly.
For me I spread the word of what I'm looking for. Both to other drummers and just fellow musicians. You never know who may go to pick up a snare from someone and realize they just walked into the treasure chest of some guy. I also put wanted ad's up online and locally. I'd say a lot of my success has been word of mouth, even the drums I've saved from the dump.
Not a Guru, just addicted to drums

If you want some inspiration, I bought these for $35 at Salvation Army in 2011 :)
1961 Ludwig Club Dates Mahogany finish 14x20, 9x13 and a matching 1963 16x16 Floor tom, with a 60's COB slingerland snare.
I've since added a near matching 6.5x14 snare, and I also picked up a messed up but salvageable Acrolite.
I'm a guitar player, but recently got into a band (hosting a jam night) playing drums, and when I told my drummer buddy about it, and my first drum gig check ($50), he said "Those drums have paid for themselves!"

You're wife is the "mid-Century" Queen? Reminds me of that Police song "Born in the 50s"!!
I'm a mid-century drum collector I guess.

WOW.. That is a major find ! In fact, seeing as how this year at NAMM Ludwig released their new Club Date Vintage series drums, which is a similar throwback to your very drum kit, i'd say you have a real treasure piece right there !.
Click on link and then click on where it says "Finishes"..

Same here. Although I like to tear em apart and put them back together again good as new and flip. I tried selling a 1961 Carlton Pipe snare on a specialized facebook group and got no hits at all, then we put it in her store and it went first time round.
