Hi-Hat Stand,...US, or Japanese??

Loading...

I picked this up and it has absolutely no name or any stampings anywhere. I'm starting to wonder if its a cheap Japanese made hi-hat stand,.. or?? Also came with very thin cymbals,... nothing on them either.

Any ideas guys?

Old, old, old US - like a Walberg & Auge or similar - we are talking '40's or earlier. Low market value - maybe worth $25-30.

Oh yeah, not looking to sell it really, just hadn't been sure of it. Loking to use it actually.

Thought it odd that there were no marks of any kind on it though?

So, thats what got me to thinking maybe it was a Japanese knockoff of some sort?

Thanks a million!!!Cool1

Oh one more thing,... I was under the impression that the traditional hi-hat didn't come out till the mid 1930s or so,.. and that the old snowshoe and even low boy setups where the norm?

The pedal looks stock Walberg & Auge. I'm not sure of the start date on those.

They sold the same one for several decades, up at least until '73. Those can be deceptive to date. I don't know if a 1943 example would be distinguishable from a 1973. Maybe the chrome quality could date it.

What I'm saying is that those stands look really old... well the new ones they sold in the 70's, at the time, looked "really old" too.

HotIron,

I`m just wondering how is the design? Does it play smoothly still? Looks crazy, the legs look so light but the pipe is solid- just wondering if it`s actually some great light weight, easy to carry treasure or a missing link in the evolution of the hat standCoffee Break2

Those stands aren't a missing link - they were the first one. They made tons of them and you see them frequently on eBay. They aren't stellar units.

There's no height adjustment, it's just one long tube, which makes it a bit awkward to carry to gigs. The later W&A's, like the 50's WFL I use are better for gigs if you're looking for something ultra-light.

yeah i figure if the design didn't change its a keeper.... i'm vaguely familiar with the Auge stuff,.. not as much as most other though.

It isn't wobbly at all,.. pretty sturdy for what it is. Also, the early stuff would have been nickel plated,... the plating on this is really questionable,... not sure about it really??

That was the Model T of hi hat stands. The first hi hat that was popular and sold in big numbers.

Walberg & Auge stuff rarely has any markings on it, and their plating has always been questionable.

Your stand looks like chrome to me. A little car wax wouldn't hurt it. I threaded the top rod of my hi hat stand like that so I just use a wing nut and don't have a hi hat clutch at all. I'm kind of a W&A fanatic and use entirely their stuff except my stool and pedal. To me it's in another league as far as quality... not much compares to the compactness, not even close, and I've never seen one W&A thing ever, ever break in using them 35+ years. Can't say that for the rest. My 50's W&A stands have the original rubber feet.
