Here's some real vintage- set made from a single 500 year old tree Last viewed: 55 minutes ago

This popped up up on CL. Not mine, just thought it was interesting - never heard of it.

This kit is made of solid black walnut that I was told is over 500 years old. The tree it came from I guess was just mammoth!

Nice!! I can imagine the resonance from the bass drum sitting on the cradle...These drums would definitely sing!!!

bunny likey stave drummies!!!!

The way he describes them, I don't think they are staves. I think they were cut on a lathe from a single tree!

The heads are attached with long rods and no lugs. They would probably sound just right for rain dances around the wigwams in a forest clearing in the wilds of Minnesota.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

LOL...Well, if the only song you gotta play is "Apache", I'm sure those drums would be fine!!

I've made a couple of stave snares. I think that kit is a stave build. It's hard to tell in the pics, but you can kinda see the line where the staves are glued together. Take a look at the one I made. Look closely and you can see where the staves are glued. I would like to know how thick the shell is. People tend to make stave shells too thick which gives a good crack but the shell doesn't resonate. I make mine about 3/8" and get a good sound. The way these are though with the single tension rods. They would be limited in tuning range. I guess they just didn't want to drill into that beautiful wood.
