Help with Slingerland ID Last viewed: 2 minutes ago

Hey all,

New guy here. I've often used this site as my go-to for all the great first-hand knowledge in the forum, but now that I'm dipping into the vintage drum world I figured I should ask first-hand.

Looking to pick up this vintage Slingerland kit in WMP. Everything from the pics looks pretty kosher but there are some discrepancies, hopefully you guys can give it to me straight. The badges look like the typical "Niles Illinois" and the interiors look like clear maple with the re-rings. The only thing throwing me off is the bass drum: as you can see it has normal tom-style tension rods instead of t-rods and the spurs are (I'm hoping) modded to a more modern Pearl/Ludwig type. I've seen some more contemporary Slingers use this configuration on the bass, but this one has the Niles badge as well as a 70's style tom mount system. Any thoughts?

Hi..Welcome to this great forum. Now on to your questions.A few of my thoughts the set could be a piece together set are all the toms and bass drum 3 ply with rings?.Id the bass drum a 5 ply shell with no ringsOn the bass drum it could be a re-wrapped drum? someone traded out the S/L spur's for Pearl or Ludwigs type's.Someone could have lost the "T" rods and added the key rods to replace them.I have been told also in the 70's when S/L changed from the 3 ply shells with rings to the 5 ply shells with out rings sometimes S/L would send a set out with mixed shells. But S/L did offer in the catalogs a 3 ply shell ot 5 ply shell too.I last thing i would look at on the bass drum at the edges and see if they have been re-cut also look around the grommet at the badge and see if it looks like it been removed these two things will tell you for sure if the drum has be re-wrapped....Mikey

The wrap looks to me to be original, you can pick up a bass mount stem and put the two toms above the bass drum. easy find on ebay. what sizes are they? Gary

joey,, the wmp wrap is factory as are the bearing edges they have not been tampered with. the only issues are the ones you've already mentioned. the bass drum spurs and the bass drum t rods are not factory, this is a 70's kit. if you can get it for $500.00 that would be a good deal. but with the mods on the bass drum this is top dollar for this kit. the sizes are 14x22' 8x12",9x13" and 16x16"? right and the snare drum is a sound king krupa model?

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

It's a really nice looking set.. If you could post the serial numbers it will assist in tracking down the production period..

And Welcome to the forum..

Cheers

Hey guys, thanks for all the replies. Ended up passing on that kit. While nice, the price was a bit much........But, with some luck, I scored this Buddy Rich style Slingerland in light blue pearl- 13/16/18/24 (with my COB Powertone tucked in the back). A very well maintained kit, 3-ply maple with re-rings (the tom mount was included as well). The only odd thing is it has Radio King claws/t-rods on the bass. Don't know if they were swapped out somewhere down the line or they were some factory leftover.

Man great looking kit. The Light Blue Pearl is a great wrap color. I really like the 24" bass. You don't see those everyday and the 18" FT either!! Very nice! :)
