Help with Ludwig marching snare.

Loading...

Was hoping someone might answer a few questions about this snare.

I'm a little confused about the age of this drum which has a date stamped inside but can't figure out the year.

1. has COB rims

2. inside not painted

3. 3/4 inch round knob muffler

4. long (I think called High tension lugs) COB lugs

5. black band between blue and silver sparkle wrap

as far as I know most drums were painted inside after 1960

the long lugs came out in 1963

brass rims thought faded out by1965

has an older super sensitive throw

badge # seems to be around 1965

kind of leans to around 1965 but inside being natural finish throws me.

any educated guesses?

trying to figure out if I should leave it alone or use the throw for a current supra project I'm working on. Was the main reason I picked it up for.

Thanks for listening. Wayne

My guess is in line with your's. 65ish. Badge has a serial number on it so it is after 63 and before 1970s blue/olive badge.

looks like a 156xxx serial number to me. that would be a mid 65 badge. the drum appears to be original. there were some early 60's clear shells and of course some late 60's clear interior shells..the latter ones were maple like yours. most of the early clear tom interiors that ive seen were mahogany, usually clear maples on the bass, but with ludwig anything goes...

ive done this same thing twice now. buy a marcher at a deal for a part. then the marcher arrives and its too nice and original to steal from! what a dilemna. good luck!

Thanks, so you think it was originally a tom and they made it into a snare?

Funny , was now thinking about using it as a tom.

Do they still make 15" super sensitive snare wires for that year?

That might be the deciding answer for what to do.

the shells for anything that was gonna be a 12x15 drum wold have been the same. i think this was an original snare. the toms from that period had the badge center mounted. would have had floor tom legs. wouldnt have had the long lugs. the upper badge placement and muffler placement all look correct to me. it would make a great floor tom,no doubt. ive got several 12x15's. they have a very nice sound to them..

Nice sway Mike

I"m just curious how you hold them up?

have you ever tried those floor tom suspension holders?

was just wondering how those are and wouldn't have to do anything to the shell.

I'm with Mike on this one... this drum is original. Everything in your description and the pics support that, IMO.

Any shell larger than 10x14 and not as popular on standard in size could show up with a clear interior vs. painted or even the later granitone. I've had drums that were obviously parts of sets originally (very close serial numbers with different interiors. Ludwig was good at that...

Good looking drum! It's of course yours, but please keep it as is and don't modify it! I traded a Supraphonic SD to another VDF member some time back because he was thinking of converting on old marching drum to a FT, and I just couldn't see him doing that to the drum he had! So we made a deal and met half-way. He was thrilled and so was I!

Anyway, as most of what I own, it ended up being for sale and it sold to a buyer on eBay at what I thought was a fair price -- and to my horror the buyer broke it down and parted it out on eBay!

i have a pre serial sky blue pearl ludwig marching snare,12x15. it was too original to modify. i took a cheap ludwig snare stand and cut a couple of sections out of it. this allowed it to go low enough to get the 15 at the right height to play. held up fine. was easy to do. ive never used any suspension type mounts before..

Sorry about the delay, live in the east coast and have been without power for a few days.

The snare stand sounds like a good idea Mike.

does anyone know where I might be able to find a 15" snare wire SS for this year (1965?) drum?
