Help w/ Hoop ID

Loading...

Hi guys I just got these hoops from a guy. They were both suppose to be 60's Ludwig 16". I think the top one is Ludwig but the bottom one is not. Am I correct? I contacted the seller and he is trying to tell me "its quite common back then that they would grab whatever hoop was lying around to throw on a set." My thought is each company had their own distinct rim lip for the most part right?

I just thought I would explain a little further. I contacted this guy about the rims. He said he had 16" and 12" rims and tension rods from a 60's Ludwig set he had a while back. So I thought I was buying the original rims and tension rods from a 60's Ludwig. When I got the package today the rods were different sizes and the two 16" rims were different. I contacted him saying "I think there was a mistake I wasn't mad and I hoped we could work it out." This was his reply to me:

"The difference in the hoops can also be production differences in Ludwigs hoops durring the 60s. Or who ever built the drum at the time could have just grabbed whatever was lying around the ludwig factory on the production floor. It's quite common to see these oddities with instruments from the 60s. You see it in Guitar amps very frequently. Even if somebody replaced the hoop back in the sixes you can tell it's from that era due to the thickness and style of it.

Yes the tension rods are different lengths. That's how they were in the toms. The drums had a long history so I can't tell their story, but I'm sure some drummer lost a tension rod and probably replaced it at some point in their 50 year history."

Here is a pic of the rods he sent me.

Thank goodness I used paypal so I am covered. Thanks goodness I didn't send it as a gift like he requested.

Here is what i think you are referring to as the shoulder.

I thought I would throw a pic up of the 12" rims too while I was at it. I think those are Ludwig.
