Help Please To Find the Age of These Ludwig Standards

People who know me from a coiple of drum forums are probably wondering what the heck I'm doing with a set of vintage Ludwig drums. The simple answer is that I still don't care much for Ludwig drums vintage or new compared to the brands that I like. I have been intrigued by the love and respect I've been reading online for the Ludwig Stndard. Today I was in a friend's terrific vintage drum department in his well-established store in Houston. I saw this set that caught my eye. It needs some sone serious cleaning of the completely intact shells, and spiffing up or replacement of some of the original hardware. I also was in need of a project. I have had a vintage Walberg & Auge bass drum with mounted and floor toms on consignment in his store. We worked out an ownership swap of his four drums for my three drums. I've been looking for a dating guide to ascertain the approximate age of these drums. The Ludwig guide found in this forum states that the serial number on the bdges of Standards cannot be linked to build dates. Here are the serial numbers. If anyone can provide information, I would be very grateful.

8x12........13369

14x14.......13389

14x20.......27162

5x14.........27107

Nice. It's ok to like Ludwig just a little. Early 1970s is off top of head guess. Ludwig released a similar wrap last year in their Keystone series. Not quite the same but almost. Ruby or salmon strata? Something like that. Yeah the Standards are enjoying a nice revival as of late. Great drums.

What color are the insides?

Have you looked inside? My Standard snare (same finish as yours) is date stamped 1968. You very well may have the month/year stamped neatly inside...

They have the light gray Granitone paint, and I cannot see a date stamp inside any of the four drums.

If granitone then those are mid to early-ish 70's I believe.

I think those would be 69 models based on the data that rick gier published in the new Ludwig dating guide. granitone would be ok for that period. some also had date stamps over the granitone finish.

Give info to know! I didn't' realize Ludwig did any granitone that early. I thought it was just around 73-later or so I thought.

I would say 1969-ish based on the serial numbers. There is a spread between your two grouped pairs of numbers, so the estimate covers a wider time range.

The Granitone interior started in about 1969 for Standards, and a few years later for main line drums (where it was called Lud-Cote). As Mike says, sometimes they have date stamps, although they are often difficult to discern with the gray speckled background.

Collecting information about the following for ongoing research projects:
Gretsch drums with serial numbers,
Ludwig Keystone and B/O badge drums with serial numbers and date stamps,
Ludwig Standards from 1968-73, and
Ludwigs with paper labels from 1971-72

Thanks to all of you for the help. I'll remove the old clear heads to give a close inspection for date stamps.

Update........No evidence of there ever having been a stamped date or a paper tag inside any of the drums.

I decided to use a Fiberskin head that I already had and the script logo that my friend included with the drum set. I'll line up the head properly with the tom mount after I spiff up the shell and the hardware.
