Help! Need Advice With "Correctness" of My Sound King Last viewed: 3 minutes ago

Loading...

I've had the Sound King, late 60's #131xxx, and have been trying to make it period correct. My issues have been:

- it has COS hoops...mint but wrong, so I picked up mint COB hoops

- it had the larger knob on the muffler, also wrong, so replaced with mint small knob

So, I thought I was done BUT, I noticed my Zoomatic strainer has that tab on the top. I thought this is a later version of the strainer from the 70's, but want to make sure of when it changed. Is this the wrong strainer?

I picked up a near-mint early strainer to replace, but want to make sure.

Also, is there no bar on the early version to hold the snare wire cord or is it just tied to the two holes?

Sorry for all the questions, just want to do this the right way.Coffee Break2

Thanks very much.

Buy your serial I think your snare is a 1967 model. It would have the tab with the two-hole slider.

You can check in the Drum Guide section for the Slingerland strainers article by Dr. Wenk for confirmation on the proper strainer and his Serial Number Guide for confirmation on the dating of your snare.

Not to muddy the waters here but wouldn't a late 60s muffler correctly have the large knob not the small knob?

MD, I thought the small muffler knob was pretty much on all '60's black & gold badge Sound Kings. Mine is somewhere around '67/'68, so COB hoops and small knob made sense. I realize that it wasn't an exact science when they were building and certainly the larger muffler knob may have found its way onto an earlier snare and vice versa.

But, that said, since I'm not the original owner, I'll never know what was factory built. I would rather go with the majority and use the small knob, COB hoops and the two-hole strainer with the tab. It isn't collectable quality, a few minor imperfections in the shell, but its a really nice/clean SK.

Seems as "correct" as I'm going to make it.

Asthetically, I actually prefer the smaller muffler knob. The picture below could have been better, but its raining and relatively dark. The red reflection on the right is from a red truck in the driveway. I still need to replace the strainer with the correct 2-hole one...have it, just need to replace it.

Thanks to all for the help!Clapping Happy2
