Help me! Look what I found, need help. Last viewed: 22 hours ago

I picked up a 4 pc set of early to mid 80's pearls off C#@$%list pretty cheap and the guy had an extra bass and floor tom he threw in. He had no idea what the were, no stamps or nothing. However they were covered in a black fur and I decided to take it off to see what shape everything was in. As I took off the "fur" there was a thick paint like substance on the drum but I could see some orange coloring under that. I tried a little goo remover and this is what I found. All I have now is the pic of the wrap finish but will try to get the lugs up also. The bass is a 20 lug bass 22x14 with curved retractable spurs and the floor tom is 16x16 and a 16 lug. The bearing edges look to be complete roundovers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

Okay, I've got a prompt informing me that I've not posted in a few weeks, so I'll take the opportunity to put in my two cents to start. More pics will definitely help, but from what you've got here, it appears to be a Japanese stencil kit. Not a bad wrap color, (I prefer it to fur anyway) though I can't give you the actual name of the pattern/color. Looks like a vertical wood grain inside drum, and the shape of the lug... (scars?) makes me think it's probably late 60s, early seventies Japanese. Probably not overly valuable, and if it's a huge effort to get the gunk off, it may not even be worth your time, unless you really like it. Got hoops, (inlays) and hardware, (lugs, claws, t-rods etc)? If not, I probably wouldn't bother. I'm not an expert though - ask for Jonnistix, and post more pics.

If you go to the vintage drum guide and click on Japanese drums, you will see some Apollo drums, which I BELIEVE are Star built.(Oval badge)Even though the picture is black and white, the pattern is correct. Were all the fur covered drums Tiger Pearl underneath? That is a really cool and desirable pattern.Lug design, tom mount, spurs and snare drum pictures will give an indication as to brand and age.Another drum adventure begins.....

Those look to be a Star stencil. It was used on about 60% of the stencil names, so anyone selling them could order that wrap. Just not a lot of the dealers would do it because it was considered a "special order" and would take a few extra weeks and most buyers did not want to wait that long for their first kit. Tat, my friends, is why most of the coolest wraps are so rare today, it took too long.

Very cool wrap - screaming vintage. Wrapped in fur-goo, I imagine the price was right. I for one would certainly spend the time to bring it back to life.
