Help Identifying Drum Kit Last viewed: 16 hours ago

Loading...

Hey guys,

I've been teaching myself to re-finish and restore kits by purchasing cheapie sets on Craigslist. I recently stumbled across something pretty cool and was wondering if anyone could help me to identify it.

There are no badges on the kit, nor is there anything written inside the shells. But, based on the hardware, shell type and the fact that the snare throw off has the word "Japan" on it, I'm gathering that it's a Japanese made kit from the mid-to-late 60's.

The drums sounds great and I'm mostly deciding if I should keep things as-is or strip it down and refinish it for personal use.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Matt

It's definitely a Japanese "Stencil" kit. Probably parts of two different MIJ kits actually (based on the lugs).

Move this over to the non-USA section and some of the MIJ guys can probably venture a guess as to what brand.

I've had a couple over the years -- currently a 12/14/20 with a 5x14 snare and no badges I'm guessing is a Star (shark tooth lugs, w/o re-rings). Same color dull sparkle as yours. I had a gold Stewart a bunch of years back too.

My advice is if you like the way they sound, don't do a damn thing except play them!

If you're interested in learning recovering / restoration its a good place to start. Although you won't likely increase their value.

Thanks for the response and the advice! I do like the way they sound (and want to work on learning to restore) so... perhaps I'll do both!

It's all MIJ, but about 10 years apart age wise. Which company made the stick-saver hoops,or did Star and Pearl both make them? The newer drums are obviously Pearl stencils. The earlier are PROBABLY Star.
