Help identifying, did I get taken? Last viewed: 1 day ago

So I'm not a drummer at all, I play a wind instrument, but I run a band and have been looking for that vintage sound that goes with early swing. So I have started to purchase pieces for our drummer. I just ordered this drum and received it. I was looking for a 28" bass, and saw Slingerland in the title, so I just purchased it as it seemed like it was a good deal ($250 shipped with no heads).

I have it now, and I'm wondering if I was taken as it now doesn't match up to some pictures I see of Slingerland's from the 1930's.

Also, I purchased some remo fiberskyn 3's that are 28" but they seem to big. The rims from the original heads are measuring 28 1/4" and the remo is measuring 28 1/2". Will it stretch down? Or do I need to purchase a different size?

Just in case the pictures don't add on here, this is the album http://imgur.com/a/vEbWX

Any help is appreciated.

Some vintage drums were not made in "true" size. Exact size didn't matter as much back then because you had to tuck your own drum heads. And, your drum is single tension, which means you can only tune both heads at the same time. The grommet does look like a Leedy also. And, sorry to say, I think you paid too much for that drum. If you're still looking for a 30's bass drum to start a set, maybe someone here (like Mark Cooper) can advise and/or help you.

Is it possible to make the remo heads work? Or will I need find someone to tuck new heads on these rims?

I definitely would like to find something without breaking the bank and the bass drum is what I want to start with.

Many older bass drums, regardless of brand, had occasional odd sizes. It was not that critical to be accurate in the days of calf heads. I have basses that are 23", 25 1/2, 27 1/2" etc. You will have to go calf, or special order a Remo Mylar (both options are a tad expensive). If you use a head that is too large , the tension rods will not clear them properly. (BTW, the tension rods you have look like Leedy. Have you inspected the inside very close ? The early Leedy drums had a logo actually branded into the wood)). (pic of Slingerland rods from a 1928 catalog)

Well after talking with the seller, he says he just doesn't want it back, so he's refunding enough that I will have only paid $100 for this all together.

Well, it looks like you've got a vintage Leedy bass drum, and some spare cash to solve the head situation. Very reasonable of the seller to refund some $$s. Good luck.

JLSmith,

The 28 1/4 hoop ring is designed to sit flush with the hoop, if you use the Remo 28 1/2, you will see a 1/4" reveal around the hoop. Not flush anymore but should still tune, providing you are giving outside diameters !i

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Thanks for the heads up.

I talked with Stern and Remo. Prices are ridiculous for calfskin and custom heads. I was also told by my drummer friend that if we play any outside be prepared to buy new skins.

So I found a Leedy 28" for just under $300, so I picked that up.

I'll probably try and sell this one to recoup my money.
