Help identifying a vitange Slingerland Last viewed: 3 minutes ago

Hi guys new member here. I was looking for a little help identifying my Slingerland drum set and getting a more professional opinion on the exact date range of it. I bought this vintage Slingerland drum kit 15 years ago when I was 16 for $100. I wanted to learn how to play the drums but ended up loosing interest as other interests (mainly girls and cars) took over. About 5 years ago, I let my nephew borrow the drum set because he wanted to play and I wasn't using it. Or atleast he thought he did. The drum set again sat alone for many years untouched and I recently just started to get the urge to play the drums again. So I bought a cheapo $135 Gammon drum set. When my sister heard that I spent money to buy a different set she said she would have given me my old set back. Since the Gammon set, sounded terrible, the cymbals were terrible quality and since I knew my old drum set has Sabian cymbals I decided to ask my sister if I could have the set back as they were not using it. I received the set back in the same condition I gave it to him in. The heads are atleast 15 year or pin stripes. The entire time I owned the set I never changed them or tuned them, who know how long they were on there before I owned it. The snare drum head is black and says Evans on it but has a different logo then Evans does now. The resonance head was missing from the bass drum as well as the bass drum hoop and claws.

Anyways, after getting it back I started messing around and learning a few easy songs. I was having a blast and was really happy to have it back. Even though the heads were old and out of tune, there was something about this set that drew me in. The light blue pearl finish was amazing to look at. I could sit for some time just staring at the finish. I always thought the set was a Pearl brand drum set for some reason and was surprised when I read the plate on the drums and it said Slingerland. I started to question, is Slingerland a good brand? Do they still make Slingerland drums, how old was this set ect. My curiosity peaked when I found the vintage drum identification website and saw that there was others that are passionate about old drums as I was growing to be.

Using the helpful website I was able to determine mine was manufactured in between 70-82 as mine has the black and silver niles badge. I am having a little trouble telling the difference between the football shaped slingerland badge and the more oval badge before it. I think mine is more oval shaped while the wife thinks its more football shaped.

Comparing the light blue pearl finish detail to the one shown from the early 58-72 light blue pearl finish on the guide, I believe it looks to be similar to that. If you compare the finish to the picture showing 73-82 that picture looks like it has too little detail to be mine. My finished has many small details. So it could be possible if my drum badge is in fact the football shape one that the drums are actualy 70-72 with a newer badge put on? The drums construction is wood, maybe two ply. Looks like there is two layers of wood there. I can take any additional pictures if it helps. One drum badge starts off with 93 something while the rest of the drums start with 100.

The set came with a slingerland 20 inch bass drum with bass drum pedal with leather strap which broke. There is an S on the bottom of the bass drum pedal. It has the metal stirrup style bass drum supports with no rubber feet or anything although the one stirrup does have some kind of C clip on it. There is two rack toms 12", 13" and a 16" floor tom. The snare that came with it is a Ludwig snare with rounded edge logo, so I am assuming the snare was purchased separate as Slingerland didn't include a snare with this set.

I have included some pictures of the set for reference. And of course I can take any additional photos if it helps. At the moment I actually have broken down the set to polish the metal, wax the exterior finish and I am replacing all drum heads with new Evans G-2 for batter and G-1's for reso's. I actually found a 20 inch light blue pearl slingerland bass drum on ebay that is just the stripped down shell, but it comes with matching bass drum hoops, so I will use the one hoop to put a new resonance head on the bass drum which I now have. Eventually I may rebuild the bass drum head shell I got from Ebay and find another hoop and turn my set up into a double bass drum setup. Would be pretty rad. Anyways thanks for the help. I can't believe how clean the set is coming and the chrome and finish is really shining now. I am definitly gonna keep up on this set now that I am more mature than I was at 16 and I don't plan on ever parting with it as I have a blast playing it. Using info from the site, it looks to be a 50N "New Rock Outfit", from around 1973.. With an Acrolite Snare.

Nice Kit

Welcome to the forum. This is a great story. You are lucky that the drums were still around. I can only guess how many kits were lent out like yours, but never made it back to their owners.

You asked, "Is Slingerland a good brand?" and there will be a lot of responses that say Yes! What's even better, you bought them for $100. That's a deal for a drum set that was listed at over $700 in the early 1970's.

I'm not a Slingerland expert, but the Slingerland guide section has a lot of information. Based on catalogs, it looks like your kit was either the New Rock or Modern Solo Outfit. Same shell packs, but different hardware.

What color are the interior of your shells? 1966 into 1970 the shells were a painted beige/milk chocolate color, but starting in 1970 clear shells started to show up. (http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/drcjw/article_3_shells10.html) They are probably 3-ply with Light Blue Pearl wrap.

Based on your serial numbers and the oval badge style, the kit is probably a 1970 to 1972. (http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/drcjw/article_1_badges.html#)

I know you're into playing them as much as possible right now, but these drums look like they will clean up great. There are many thread here that explain the proper way to clean/detail drums, so you can do a search. But never use any type of steel wool on any part. That stuff is bad news. After a good cleaning, they will literally look like brand new drums.

Post an ad in the Wanted section for a bass hoop, claws and T-rods and I'm sure someone will reply.

BTW, your snare is a Ludwig Acrolite. Many refer to this as a student snare, but that's far from the truth. It's a workhorse that's versatile and sounds great.

thanks for the helpful responses, so you think this is the oval badge as opposed to the football shaped one? Thats what I was thinking but its hard for me to tell. The color of the interior shell is just the regular wood color. It doesn't appear to be painted or stained inside the shells.

I am in the process of replacing all the heads with new evans heads, polishing the chrome and waxing the drums. What a difference that makes. The chrome really shines now. I will get some after pictures up. The pictures I posted were before I cleaned them or put the new heads on.

They are in pretty good shape for a 40 year old drum, although I notice the bass drum has a small crack on the interior of it when I was replacing the head.

I have a matching finish 20 " bass drum shell with two hoops on order through ebay and will be installing a reso head on the bass drum for the first time ever since I owned it. It already sounds better with the new heads. Cant wait to hear the bass drum in all it glory

Welcome and great looking kit! I love the light blue pearl. I have a 60's kit in the same color except with a 22" bass. That's so cool you were able to get them back after all those years!! Enjoy them! :)

Yes it's the oval badge, missed that, so I would say around 72..

Hi there.

Came over this thread and I need some help: I recently bought an old Slingerland kit in natural mahogany/brown colours with oval (more like football shaped) black and silver badges. The combination of sizes and drums are a bit odd: 24x14, 13x14 and 14x14. The kick drum has original bass drum brackets, but the tension lug brackets seems more modern and probably exchanged with the old ones. I'm wondering if someone could manage to pinpoint a more exact date of manufacturing? From looking at the serial and LOADS of vintage forums and guides, I'm slighty confused, but aiming for early 1980's. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

The badge dates it to 1985. the lugs are not slingerland. The lugs look to be Ludwig standard lugs on teh toms I can't tell from the angle of the bass drum.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!
