Help dating a newer Ludwig bass drum Last viewed: 10 hours ago

Loading...

Hello everyone, a guitar player friend of mine came in possession of a Ludwig 24" bass drum that he decided to give me as opposed to using it as a coffee table. I cannot find info on this serial number as they stop at 79 which leads me to believe it is 80-81?? It is a black wrap with B/O badge, serial 2102271.

Thanks so much!

Mike F,

Can you tell me if the badge has pointed corners (lower left and upper right) or if they have been rounded off? Both styles of badge were in use during that serial number range.

Based upon information that I have gathered, I would suggest that the drum is from the 1981/82 time frame.

Rick

Brewkowski,

Upon what are you basing your end date for the Pointy badge? Most published resources, including the Vintage Drum Guide associated with this forum (http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/ludwig_badges.html) point to it being in use at least until the late 1970s. I personally think it went into the early 1980s. I also think that both Pointy and Round corner badges were in use simultaneously for a few years. This simultaneous use makes it a bit difficult to decifer.

Just what I've been told and seen for myself through the years. MikeF, what does the interior look like? If it is clear maple interior then that would pretty much confirm they are pre-76. Sometime in 76 is when Ludwig went to the granitone sprayed interiors. Agree completely that they used badges simultaneously.
