Hey guys. I recently acquired a Camco Oaklawn kit and I'm wondering how to go about narrowing down the year of the kit. The badge is of the "Oaklawn, Illinois, USA" make. I assumed I would see a date written inside of a shell, but have yet to see such evidence. The sizes are 12, 13, 16, 22 and a 14 snare. Straight tom legs with notches...anybody have any advice? Thanks.
Help dating a Camco Oaklawn kit... Last viewed: 5 hours ago
Richard, could you post some pics for us to help evaluate your kit.?
Pictures would definitely help,...
Camco Oaklawn drums would be roughly between 1961 and 1971.
You will not find stamps like Ludwig did but they're plenty of characteristics to give you an approximate date of manufacturing.
- Type of hoops? (COB tall boy or not)
- Type of bass drum tom holder?
- 4 or 6 ply shells?
- Finish
- Cloud badge vs oval badge?
- etc....
Walnut stain finish...cloud badge...the site isn't allowing me to post pictures...the files may be too large. What is the difference between tall boy and regular hoops? The base of the tom mount on the bass drum is the shape of a triangle, if that helps.
from what i understand about dating oaklawn camcos is there are three different badges used at that time, 1961-1971, two of the badges where the cloud type badges, one having made in oaklawn, illinois written on it and the other cloud type badge having made in oaklawn, illnois U.S.A. written on it. the one with just oaklawn illinois was made in the early years of the oaklawn period and the oaklawn illinois U.S.A being of the later years.
the third badge is an oval shape badge and i think it was only on certain modals af camcos. hope this helps. there will be other camco collectors that will have more info and will pipe in. camcos are pretty popular around here.
please anyone, if i have given wrong info here please correct me, thanks.
Welcome to the forum.
Robyn
A little bit of uncertainty when the triangle tom mount came into usage but certainly at the later end...1967 or so would be my guess. I know my Oaklawn kit from 69 or so has the triangle tom mount with the ball and socket mount.
The tallboy rims - they don't look quite look like anything else - if you know about drums you'd know you had them otherwise the rims look like any other standard rim. Also vague when these were discontinued but, again, probably 67 or so.
USA on the badge came in pretty early from memory.
I'm notoriously bad at counting plies so I leave that to others.
Given the comparative lack of information, I think it's fair to say dating Camcos is more an art than an actual science.
Hi Richard,
On these pictures you can see the different between the tall boys and the more regular hoops. (12" regular, 13" tall boy) This set is the same size as yours and has the same characteristics. (22,16,13,12, Triangle tom mount, straight tom legs, natural finish, cloud badge)
Camco 6-ply Jasper shells should look like the third picture.
I've asked myself the same question about dating this set and the answer was somewhere mid 60's.
Try to resize your pictures by opening them and export them to a lower quality jpeg,... should work.
Sorry, no straight tom legs on this set.
It has straight bass drum spurs. (disappearing type)

I have an Oaklawn/USA badge/4ply/ COB hoop kit that has a triangle tom mount. The triangle mount came out fairly early as they do appear in the second Camco catalog. USA badges also came out fairly early as my kit is a 4ply kit. Camco switched to a 6 ply shell in the mid-60's.

Is the second Camco catalogue the 1962 one?
