Head choice for Ludwig Bronze Supra?

Loading...

Hello All,

I'll be playing outdoor, mostly unmiked gigs this summer, and my weapon of choice is a Ludwig 6-1/2 x 14 Non-Hammered Bronze Supra from the 90's or so with the large KS badge. Right now, it has a Ludwig Heavy Clear Rocker on top with an Evans Hazy 300 on the bottom. It sounds great, but before I replace the heads with my normal go-to Ambassador heads, what would you suggest for maximum volume? Stay with a thicker head a la the Heavy Rocker? Something else? All opinions welcomed.

Thanks!

Depends on what you mean by "maximum".

For my maximum volume, I'd go with a Ludwig medium coated head. Great sound, responsive feel, durable coating... But I'm a fairly relaxed player. Guys who come down on the drum with a full overhand smash are probably going to want something a little tougher than an Ambassador or a Ludwig medium. Maybe a slightly thicker head like an Evans G Plus or Remo Ambassador X, or something with a reinforcing dot like an Evans Power Center. If you're really going to beat the snot out of it, maybe a two-ply head. And beyond that, there's the Evans Hybrid, but I don't think I'll ever recommend an aramid fiber head for anything other than a marching snare. (Unless you want to crank the drum tight enough to rip its lug casings right out of the shell.)

My playing is a little on the heavy side, but I wouldn't call it pile-driving. In fact, if I play too loudly, it will affect my ability to hear the rest of the band, as I am not using a monitor.

So far, the G-Plus has me curious. I'm aware that it's in between a 1 and 2 ply head. That might be just what the doctor ordered.

Those Remo Ambassadors with the black dot on the under side are pretty good. Last a while too.
