Gretsch Round Badge Purchase

Loading...

I picked up this re-wrapped kit the other day. I am almost certain that all the shells are original Gretsch, but the bass, and snare do not have silver painted interiors. The rack tom interior, on the other hand, is painted and in extremely nice condition. I have not see too many accounts of Round Badge sets with mixed shell interiors. The floor tom that came with the kit is a vintage premier (original wrap) and not a Gretsch. The kick and rack both have a few extra holes. Two of the extra holes in the kick drum look to be professional filled, while there is a non Gretsch mount (Premier?) also installed elsewhere on the kick shell.

Does this mixture of shell interiors indicate anything in particular about these drums? I suppose it is possible that this is an orphan set that someone threw together at one point. I am debating keeping the snare but not if it adds considerable value to the other two drums.

I know that Gretsch mostly, if not always, used glass glitters. Did they ever use sparkle finishes? This kit's finish is blue sparkle. Although it is nicely done, I would have to assume it's a re-wrap because of the extra kick drum holes which have been covered.

Any opinions or information would be greatly appreciated. The knowledge that is contributed to this forum is humbling!

I can post more photos later if necessary.

I just noticed the wraps in the 1958 Gretsch catalog. They appear to be sparkle rather than the glass glitter shown in later catalogs, but I can't tell for sure.

Looks like the Bass and Snare are 3ply shells, which were not painted silver on the interior. The rack tom is clearly 6ply which would have had the silver paint. As for the finish I'm not sure whether Gretsch was using a Sparkle or a Glass at this time.

There are cases when mixed shells went out together in a kit durring the transition period. I believe one of our members, Kona, has a transition era kit with 3ply shells on all but the floor which is 6ply.

Hello, On your set the bass drum and snare are 50's Gretsch. In the 50's Gretsch did not paint the inside of the shell silver.I think your mounted tom is 6 ply, Gretsch started to do these shell's in 1960 or so painted silver with 6 ply shell's..So your set maybe from the very late 50's into the 1960 or your set could have been a piece together set too..Still in a good vintage Gretsch set..Oh on the floor tom if i re-call right late 50's i hope you have the missing rim the rim is metric so are the t-rods...Mikey

Cool find. The Premier FT lugs are quite something. I've never seen them before. Will you hunt for a matching FT?

Enjoy.
