Gretsch round badge kit - should I? Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Loading...

I've been considering buying an intermediate level modern kit, or a good vintage players kit, for traveling and outdoor gigs - something I wouldn't stroke about being scratched. That being said, what do you good folks think about this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/330750140268?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_500wt_1184?

I don't know much about vintage Gretsch drums, other than hearing that the round badge kits are amazing. I see a few things wrong with this kit and know that it would be a little work getting the paint off the wraps, but I don't mind working on drums (enjoy it quite a bit, actually) and it's well worth it to me if they turn out to be champagne sparkle.

Question is: Is this kit worth taking a stab at?

Thanks for any and all advice!

Lynn

Lynn, if it can be had for near to the price it is opening at, it would be a good score. But if it goes very much higher before close, it does need a lot of very expensive parts to complete. Die-cast hoops alone will run between $60 and a $100. per hoop. Add up for how much it will cost to buy the missing tone controls, plus new heads etc. So you don't want to buy at too high a price. Do a little math and see first how much it would cost to restore the kit. Then base your bid offer accordingly. Otherwise, you 'could' end up paying almost full retail for a kit you had to do some serious work on.

Good deal as-is. Too much higher in price and, no deal anymore.

Too many great drums to list here!

I agree with John it may be expensive to get the parts. It looks like the badges are there...Hard to see one of the tom badges. Is the bass drum badge there? The badges can run 100+ each.

You're looking at $500+ for parts and heads easy and then you may end up not being able to salvage the Sparkle wrap?? But, you know....if you can get these drums for $400 and you have to put $500 to $700 or so into them you'd have a very nice old Gretsch Shellpack (they'll only get more expensive and harder to find as time goes on) and the satisfaction of rescuing them with all your TLC....

Ya...I think it's worth it if the shells are round n' sound.

Look at it this way - those drums would be over $3K...closer to $4K in Canada...if you bought them new today. So if you can get a very nice Vintage shellpack for anywhere near under $2K....that's pretty good in my books.

Thanks for the input guys. I will certainly think about it some more. Mind Blowi I want something good, but inexpensive. I know this would be a good kit and - forgive me for thinking like our hated drum-stripping enemies - I know the shells, hoops and badges have to be worth more than $400. I just don't know if I could help myself and let it stay my inexpensive haul-around kit for too long. I tend to immediately start looking for correct parts and spending more money.

Thanks again guys!
