Gretsch Round Badge 4157 - pre paper tag

Loading...

Hey guys I had been on the hunt for a nice 4157 for quite sometime. After I saw what they were going for in stores and on feebay I was thinking it would be a while before I found a decent priced one. Funny thing about price - I read threads from this forum that are a couple years old and those prices have gone up for a number of drums.

I guess a lot of the other people interested in this drum were turned off by the lack of paper tag and lack of snap in key holder. At first I thought I had been had but after further research there were a number of 4157's built this way.

Even better was this drum has a complete micro sensitive strainer and no extra holes at all. I have already gigged it and I really enjoy it. Funny thing about the original strainer is that it tends to revert to the snare off position. I found the cheapest and easy fix for this by simply looping a rubber band (black of course) around the nearest tension rod opposite the snare strainer arm and then placing the open end around the strainer arm. Problem solved and I promise you no one will ever know.

These pictures were taken after a quick and dirty clean down. I also sprayed with a quick detailing wax I had used on a number of my cars.

Nice drums. I've used the old rubber band fix many times. I word of caution.. bring spare rubber bands along to your gigs. They always break during the middle of a set.

I bought a repro strainer. It fits hole pattern and you can switch off wires in a second what I need from time to time. And you save 50 years old strainer from possible damage

Yes I have the repro on my 4160 and love it. I will swap at somepoint. My backup for rubber bands is a black wire tie. Overall the new repro strainer is a great looking and functional piece of kit.
